GPS is my friend, lost my co pilot in 1997 and gps works just fine for me,my moto is to keep moving in a van and it has never got me lost,i have a tom tom one and update every month for free and I do test it by going off route just to see if it will get me back on course and it does everytime never fails, some just don't know or want to know how they work,it helps navigate around road repairs and such and she talks to me(nags me when off course)I love it and it make driving alone much safer. cheers

I prefer maps over GPS or phone apps. I recently got an apple iPhone that has a "maps" application and I admit i use that if I am trying to find someplace when I don't have a map or don't have access to a printer to print out mapquest directions, but I still prefer a good old map. ThomasGuide to be precise.

I have been burned by GPS before. tTold to go the wrong ay down a one-way street, told to drive across a street with a cement divider, told to drive through a wall, told to turn onto non-existent streets…..

For me, its both. . . GPS & folding maps. GPS is more day to day and maps for trips .

I did miss one turn that cost me an additional 28 mi off my route but hey that was part of the fun.

This is the way I like to travel, NO maps, No GPS If I want to turn left I turn. If I want to stop to eat, If I want a hotel or camp my van. I left San Diego on a short test trip of the red van, 1st day I ended up in Tombstone AZ. The next mornin got up got in the driver seat got to the freeway. The next biggest decision I had was do I turn left or right ..... well I turned right & that started a 7 week 6700 mile road trip to the Florida Keys & back. No maps No GPS.

I agree completely. The best things in life are unplanned and found in the backroads and off the beaten path. If I ever get the time to do just a general pleasure drive, that is how I would do it.
