How many of you are still using road maps for traveling, trips and vacations or are you using cell phone Apps and GPS devices today? I am sure many of you can remember the old style fold out maps covering the van dash or the girl friend being the navigator with it. cheers

You need both. You need to look at a map to see where you are in relation to your surroundings and where you are going.

Back in the day there was no gps.
I remember driving across country and buying a new map when we reached each state. Then you have a huge mess of maps all folded the wrong way everywhere in the van. Thats what makes it real though. Most people cant even navigate at all without gps
I personally hate gps as it send me the wrong way and that never happens when Im reading a map
real maps
FTW!!

Last Summer I drove a van I bought 2,694 mi from BC to Ontario. No GPS, no cell phone just a road map I bought from a corner store. Getting lost and going off route is part of the adventure as you have stop and ask directions and meet with the locals. If I had a GPS I would have just zoomed on through not talking to anyone. I did miss one turn that cost me an additional 28 mi off my route but hey that was part of the fun.

Looking back on the trip I wish I would have had a CB Radio as there are vast areas of unpopulated areas on northern Ontario roads lots of wilderness and nothing else. Basically you run out of gas or breakdown your in BIG trouble. frown

I was looking at one the one top of the line GPS's from Garmin that has all the bells and whistles but at $329.99 US, compared to the price of a roadmap that doesn't need batteries and will never die on you. The winner is a no brainer.

I agree real maps FTW!!

Woof yeah thats pricey
Here in SF there are like 4 roads all named
4th ave terrace
This will have the gps hella confused and 5 out of 6 times
It send me the wrong way which leads to an argument as
to who is to blame for driving to the wrong county, then
I bang my head against the steering wheel a few times and curse myself for not just buying a map like a smart person
we rely to much on electronic crap and refuse to learn
at least me sometimes.
bring back the 80's

When you travel stop at the first rest area in a new state. They usually are Welcome Centers and have free maps.

The next generation won't know how to read a road map or back-up their car or parallel park with out some tech device helping them. Which is ok as we have to separate the men from the boys. lol

Back in the early days of Vannin I had a Road atlas in the van that had all roads in the US in it.

The only Stephentown on earth.
I don't mind Coming to work,
but that 8hr wait to go home is a bitch.
No matter how little I do,
I always feel I could do less.
