I recently got an apple iPhone that has a "maps" application and I admit i use that if I am trying to find someplace when I don't have a map or don't have access to a printer to print out mapquest directions, but I still prefer a good old map. ThomasGuide to be precise.
I have been burned by GPS before. tTold to go the wrong ay down a one-way street, told to drive across a street with a cement divider, told to drive through a wall, told to turn onto non-existent streets…..

No GPS, no cell phone just a road map I bought from a corner store. Getting lost and going off route is part of the adventure as you have stop and ask directions and meet with the locals. If I had a GPS I would have just zoomed on through not talking to anyone. I did miss one turn that cost me an additional 28 mi off my route but hey that was part of the fun. This is the way I like to travel, NO maps, No GPS If I want to turn left I turn. If I want to stop to eat, If I want a hotel or camp my van. I left San Diego on a short test trip of the red van, 1st day I ended up in Tombstone AZ. The next mornin got up got in the driver seat got to the freeway. The next biggest decision I had was do I turn left or right ..... well I turned right & that started a 7 week 6700 mile road trip to the Florida Keys & back. No maps No GPS. http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/f...20Diego%20to%20Flordia?sort=2&page=1

The best things in life are unplanned and found in the backroads and off the beaten path. If I ever get the time to do just a general pleasure drive, that is how I would do it.
