Runs well but at 65mpg the check engine light kicks on. Seems to drive just fine, and everytime you restart it goes away until you hit 65mpg again. Drive around town just fine, and only get the light at freeway speeds.
Since the light goes away as soon as I turn off the engine, can it be checked while still running?
From some stuff I have read it could possibly be the EGR clogged with stuff? | | | Re: Engine light comes on >65 but goes away | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 233 Likes: 2 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 233 Likes: 2 | On my original 4.3L engine in my 1992, I saw the same problem after I disconnected the EGR valve. You should have OBDI diagnostics, which you can get codes from with a paper clip. Search OBDI on 1995 chevy on Google. If you pull the dogbox, check the EGR valve and hoses. It should be located at rear of throttle body, on the intake manifold. Someone may have plated it off or pulled the vacuum lines. As long as it runs ok and gets normal mileage (14-20mpg), I wouldn't worry about it. 1992 Chevy G20, 110" wheelbase, Mark III conversion, L31/4L80e swap, Express wiring harness.

Had the plugs gapped at .45 instead of .35, and two of the plug wires had the rubber boots corroded away exposing the metal clips inside. One of the vacuum lines from the manifold to a switch near the egr was cracked, replaced that.
The egr looks somewhat newer, but perhaps its clogged with crap?
I have also heard changing the exhaust to something less restrictive will cause a code. The previous owner got rid of the cat but has a y pipe going into a huge muffler then out the back with a bend.
The first tank averaged out 16mpg with 60% highway 65Mph+ speeds and 40% open city driving. That's with most of the tank being used before I did anything to the van, and two old crap tires on front and low air in the rears.

I guess is a "soft code" when the light goes out but the computer still stores it.
I checked all the vacuum lines and they seems connected properly and nothing is cracked. The EGR looks newer like I thought, but an aftermarket one, not OEM. I have read TBI engines are picky on the kinds of EGR you use, and only to go OEM. What else you guys think it may be? | | | Re: Engine light comes on >65 but goes away | Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 150 member | OP member Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 150 | Mini update
rechecked all the vacumm lines and routing, looks good.
Stopped at Autozone and got another egr solenoid just to test it out.
Light now comes on much faster and at lower speeds. Leads me to believe the newer switch is working better and the EGR is not opening/closing completely as it should. Going to order an OEM one to replace the aftermarket one and will update with results! | | | Re: Engine light comes on >65 but goes away | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 12,898 Vanner | Vanner Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 12,898 | Run a can of Seafoam into the air intake. John from our club had a Caravan with an egr code and had good luck taking a can of seafoam and spraying it down the tube on to the valve assembly itself and let is soak overnight...cleared it right up and has never had another issue....so it must have been a carbon build up

Beats spending $60+ on a new valve. | | | Re: Engine light comes on >65 but goes away | Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 150 member | OP member Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 150 | Update:
Pulled the EGR and it actually looked fairly clean. The ports on the intake side looked clear and not clogged.
I purchased a new Delco EGR # 214-5074 Gm# 19210655 which should be OEM style. It is slightly different than the one I pulled off. It was bronze colored, with a small plastic elbow on top, also had small openings underneath where you could see the diaphragm. The Delco one is silver, has a solid metal line fitting and has the underside is very open.
Put on the new EGR, Code showed up again.
Put on the new Solenoid along with the new EGR, still have a code.
I have a bunch of tune up parts coming in the mail, should be here Wensday so I will put those on and see if that changes anything. If not my next step is 02 sensor since those are cheap and then adding a CAT back on. | | |
