The parking light doesn't illuminate when I activate the parking light nor the right turn signal.
I took the assembly apart and there is minimal corrosion on the socket. Inserted new blurb, no haps.
Bizarre thing is that when I take out the parking bulb, the side marker illuminates however dim. When I put in a bulb in the parking light the side marker light goes out.
Any opinions? | | | Re: Short or ground issues? 79 G20, right parking lamp | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 233 Likes: 2 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 233 Likes: 2 | First, replace all bulbs on the side of vehicle that has the problem. Probably 1157's for front park/turn signals and probably 194's for the park lamps. Put grease on bulb connections to prevent future corrosion. Often, lighting problems are caused by a bad bulb with a broken or shorting element causing intermittent problems. Then, you can start troubleshooting. Do any park lamps work? Do any turn signals on that side of vehicle work? Be careful with rear lenses. They stick to body and are easily broken. Tighten screws loosely to avoid cracking lenses. 1992 Chevy G20, 110" wheelbase, Mark III conversion, L31/4L80e swap, Express wiring harness.

A battery terminal will do the trick even better.
Baking soda and vinegar work nicely also.
Anyway, key is to make sure all those sockets are clean and corrosion free or they will not get proper contact. | | | Re: Short or ground issues? 79 G20, right parking lamp | Joined: Jan 2014 Posts: 90 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Jan 2014 Posts: 90 | First, replace all bulbs on the side of vehicle that has the problem. New bulbs were placed in bot units initially. I tested for continuity and gt random numbers on contact. Multimeter didn't beep. Does this mean the socket is ok? Minor corrosion present in the bulb sockets, nothing to be alarmed about but I'll clean them anyhow. The headlight, side marking, and parking light are share a common ground which is behind the left headlight so I cleaned up the eyelet and the ground base. | | | Re: Short or ground issues? 79 G20, right parking lamp | Joined: Jan 2014 Posts: 2,290 Likes: 137 veteran | veteran Joined: Jan 2014 Posts: 2,290 Likes: 137 | That ground could have been causing your issue as well.
I'd also check the main engine to chassis ground just to be on the safe side. I've seen that one cause all sorts of strange gremlins. | | | Re: Short or ground issues? 79 G20, right parking lamp | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 12,898 Vanner | Vanner Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 12,898 | Probably a bad ground due to corrosion.....clean and put die-electric grease in the sockets
Also if you have a trailer hitch harness, check it for bared wires rubbing

Popped the head off the engine to frame ground. It was super rusted. Interesting enough the ground wire is thin and flat like a shoestring. Also, it was almost laying on the exhaust pipe. Looks like I'll be learning how to drill and tap a new thread. I started to sand the the frame though.

You're getting it just fine. If we didn't take one step forward then two steps back, we wouldn't call it "fun." ;)
If this part doesn't cure it, move on to the sockets. Then the headlight grounds. Just keep narrowing down the issues one by one. | | |
