Thanks for all your input, folks.

So - I rigged things up this weekend... pictures below of what I came up with. I'll be trimming the vinyl dryer ducting a little shorter - this was a 16' piece it came with - tested well yesterday seems like it should keep things pretty cool.

Not sure if any type of exhausting is possible/needed- nor how i'd even do it. I figure i'll crack my roof vent if needed to release humidity.

First I just zipped 6 screws to the face of the metal piece i found (10" long by 3" wide-ish). Then i wrapped it with the aluminum tape to make it air tight to the unit (not pictured.

Then i took the 6" exit off the unit down to 4" in order to get dryer duct connected. Had to use a 6 to 5" metal reducer, then a 5" to 4" PVC reducer since that was all the hardware store had in stock. Again - i plan to trim the white hose so the air has less distance to travel to get inside the van.

I cut a piece of plexiglass that fits in the top 1/3 of the window tracks on the sides, and closing the window below it puts a little pressure on the plexi tight enough for me. Zipped a 4" hole in the plexi & mounted a toilet flange to it. Just one screw will take the hose clamp / venting off the flange, so it should pack up fairly compact. Plus I can use it on my '75 as well.

I'll probably build a little 'roof' (or use a bin lid lol) to keep the water out from inside the AC unit in case it rains. I plan to give this a whirl next week at the Nats.

PS: I was inspired by Wizard for this experimental set up so i've gotta give credit where it's due!

That is cool!! I especially like the fact that its on the pass side so the driver side still looks clean and within your campsite.

I got a good one for you, back in high school one summer my friends a/c died in his van. He put a regular window unit in the back door window and put brackets on the bumper for a small Honda generator. He drove around like that and we all thought he was nuts but it worked!

Thanks guys!

Somebody was telling me I should have an exhaust hose coming out too - basically somehow hooked to the filter side of the AC unit to pull out hot air & humidity.

Sound right to the AC gurus here? I'm sure it can't hurt - might help with the humidity - and i have room for one more flange thru the window (i'd put exhaust where air blows in now). I'm just not sure how the heck i'd connect the hose to the back of the AC unit and if that puzzle's even worth the effort...

You will want to vent the interior of the van to release hot air and moisture. The most efficient way to do it would be to rig up an exhaust hose coming out of the back of your van that made its way to the intake area (large area under the outlet on your unit) to maximize the crossflow effect. Cold air going in one end of the van displacing the hot air, and the hot air being sucked out at the other end of the van.

I see your rear windows open. If you coudl rig up some kind of cover for one of the windows with an outlet hose then you should be good.

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!

If the A/C unit is already sitting outside, no need for an exhaust.
