I'm re-assembling my 79 chevy G30 at the moment after a restoration. With the van having been repainted the old bolt heads are looking kinda nasty so I want to replace them with new stainless/zinc plated bolts where appropriate. What are the typical thread sizes used in my van.Being in Ireland imperial bolts are a bit harder to find and I'll probably order them online.

A trick I use all the time is.Use a piece of cardboard punch holes in it insert bolts /screws.paint the heads with what ever color you want.
Let them dry.
Surprisingly the paint will remain on the heads od the bolts and will survive the install, reassembly very well.....

Hmm not a bad idea wookee. But there's still a few I'd like to replace. I'm gonna bring a bag of assorted bolts to a fasteners suppliers tommorrow and see what I can get.

Also, I got some different imperial sized bolts from MacB in Cork a while back when I was replacing the bolts on the engine.

Here's what they currently have in stock. Not sure of the grade, can check if you wish, but all are Zn plated.

UNC
¼ x 1/2 , 5/8, ¾, 1, 1 1/4 , 1 ¾ , 2
5/16 x ¾, 7/8, 1, 1 ¼, 2
3/8 x ¾, 1, 1 ¼, 1 ½, 1 ¾ , 2 ¼ ,2 ½
½ x 2, 2 ¼, 2 1/2 , 3 ½, 3 3/4 , 4 ½

UNF
5/16 x ¾
3/8 x ¾, 2 ½

Starting in the mid to late 70s, Chevy (and the rest of GM and other car companies as well) started using some metric bolts along with the standard. For quite a few years, you needed both standard and metric tools to work on your vehicle. Both my 91 and my 95 Chevy Vans still had a mix of metric and standard bolts throughout.

Mines a 79 I have used both metric and and imperial sockets on various bolts but allways thought that was just down to the crossover between the two (1/2" = 13mm etc). I presumed all the threads were either UNC or UNF.
