on my '75 i have 2 fuel filters. one between the fuel pump and carb and this other one on the frame rail. i was wondering if the previous owner put this on or is that how they came? wondering if others with the 70's Dodges have this filter on the rail also?

Previous owner put that on. Stock, your van has the fuel pickup filter in the tank and the filter between the pump and the carb.

The filter on the frame rail is the factory installed one.

No, the frame rail filter is not stock. The stock filter is the one between the pump and the carb. The filter on the frame rail was added by a previous owner.

I was gonna replace it but was wondering if I should put another one in or just add a piece of fuel line in instead.

I would get a flaring tool and splice back in a piece of hard metal line. Second choice would be a section of fuel line (be sure to use 30R9 hose that is designed to stand up to modern gasoline formulations). Third choice would be replace the filter with a METAL filter. One good rock to that plastic filter and your van might catch on fire.

Pic from the Dodge Factory Service Manual. Definitely factory installed.

Interesting! I stand corrected. I have never seen one in that location, of course, I have only ever owned one mid Dodge.

I had a 73 and 75 and both had the frame filters on them and one between the pump and carb. I did the same on the Phoenix but did everything from scratch and have three filters in line. the first one is the Fram racing filterand it is a big three inch with a replaceable element in it. then a conventional filter in line after the pump then I have a crushed brass filter on the side of the carb. A little overkill there but glad I did it that way because I did not realize how much crap was in the gas tank after several years of sitting and rusting all the filters purified enough gas to get me to the Nats to win Best in Class and Best Paint before it fell on its face just as we got home. The fram was filled up with a rust colored clay looking stuff ,that is when I started the thread in here on changing gas tank in Phoenix and bought the new tank.

Cheers!
