The key will turn but the latch doesn't seem to engage a locking mechanism. I searched but couldn't find any results. Thanks in advance. | | | Re: Rear door won't lock on 1978 G20 | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,578 Likes: 2 veteran | veteran Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,578 Likes: 2 | Remove whatever is covering the rear door and there is a 4" X 4" hole right in back of the handle and key you will see whats wrong if you look in there. It sounds like the key latch is not in the lock slider. Once you open the door panel you will see a slide bar that slides up and down, move it with your hand and see if the door unlocks / locks.

I'll let you know how it goes. My plans are to fix er up over time and keep it stock. | | | Re: Rear door won't lock on 1978 G20 | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 veteran | veteran Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 | This usually happens when the lock is removed and reinstalled. It's a little tricky to get the arm from the lock into the slot on the latch. It's not impossible, just a little tricky.
Just slide the big retaining clip off the door to door lock (be sure not to drop it or you'll be fishing for it for a while), then move the lock around until the U-shaped arm goes into the rectangular slot in the latch. You may need to bend the arm a tad if the last guy bent it putting it back. The arm should be U-shaped with sharp turns, not curved.
Once all lined up and tested, put the clip back on (it just slides on until it stops), it's tight....
In some rare cases, the arm comes off the lock or the lock itself is broken. If that's your problem, you'll need to replace the correct part. RipperServing NYC/LI 347-303-7403 | | |
