Hey guys. I'm looking to add some carpeting to my cargo van. In regards to a base layer, what is the best way to layer the carpeting?

not sure if this is what you're looking for but here is how i did my floor. got some heat/sound insulation from JC Whitney and glued to the floor. then screwed down a piece of wood (can't remember if it was 5/8 or 3/4). a carpet buddy of mine got me some carpet pad which i glued down with D-815 carpet glue. also used that glue for the carpet. works nicely.

Yep, used it on the floor, walls, ceiling, on the engine side of the doghouse, and behind each door panel. Also used house insulation on the walls. Happy with it but I don't really have anything to compare it to.

So, you just cut the carpet to fit, put the glue on and stuck it up there?

(I assume you had something to hold it up while the glue set.)

My shag is coming in Tuesday and I'm looking forward to hanging it. laugh

Man, you just can't buy good panelling these days. This new stuff is crap.

When I did my interior I put in all the panels first on the walls and ceiling and made sure they fit the way I wanted. then took them back out and glued the carpet to them and once dried put them in and screwed em in. The screws are hidden pretty well into the carpet. I wrapped the carpet around the panels and stapled them on the back so the edges are covered and look nice. If you wrap the carpet, or material, around the back make sure you cut the panels a hair short so they will fit in. I used pretty thin carpet on the walls, ceiling, and door panels and was amazed at how much bigger the panels got when wrapping carpet around the back. A lot of work but worth it when it comes out right.

Thanks.

I was thinking about using contact cement to glue the carpet to the paneling and then backing that up with staples (that just sounds like a bad idea, though) and a couple of wooden strips (these will have LED strip lights on them)to keep it from sagging down later.

With long pile shag, I don't think I'll need to worry about the seams showing as long as they're level.

I realize I am chiming in a little late but maybe someone could benefit from my experience. I was in the carpet business for the first 25 years of my working life and have done a few van interiors. One thing that helps make the carpet part easier is to leave a 1/4" to 3/8" gap between the plywood at the junction of the wall and ceiling and the wall and floor and cut the carpet a little oversize so it can be tucked in the crack with a putty knife like you would with tack strips along a wall in a house. If you are using a carpet with a decent nap, this gives a really neat edge without having to be exact on your cuts and keeps the carpet from wanting to come loose on the edges.

Dont forget the Jute! 2-3 layers can be sound suppression enough and is a lot more inexpensive than Sound Suppression Rubbers/Coatings.
