(I assume you had something to hold it up while the glue set.) My shag is coming in Tuesday and I'm looking forward to hanging it.

The screws are hidden pretty well into the carpet. I wrapped the carpet around the panels and stapled them on the back so the edges are covered and look nice. If you wrap the carpet, or material, around the back make sure you cut the panels a hair short so they will fit in. I used pretty thin carpet on the walls, ceiling, and door panels and was amazed at how much bigger the panels got when wrapping carpet around the back. A lot of work but worth it when it comes out right. | | | Re: base layer for carpeting | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 267 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 267 | Thanks.
I was thinking about using contact cement to glue the carpet to the paneling and then backing that up with staples (that just sounds like a bad idea, though) and a couple of wooden strips (these will have LED strip lights on them)to keep it from sagging down later.
With long pile shag, I don't think I'll need to worry about the seams showing as long as they're level.

I was in the carpet business for the first 25 years of my working life and have done a few van interiors. One thing that helps make the carpet part easier is to leave a 1/4" to 3/8" gap between the plywood at the junction of the wall and ceiling and the wall and floor and cut the carpet a little oversize so it can be tucked in the crack with a putty knife like you would with tack strips along a wall in a house. If you are using a carpet with a decent nap, this gives a really neat edge without having to be exact on your cuts and keeps the carpet from wanting to come loose on the edges.
