Is this Mopar hype or is there something better with in the same price range? There is a seller on ebay selling these for 80-100 bucks. I just had a cheap OEM starter replaced on my van cause I couldn't wait and now I'm thinking about upgrading. That doesn't look like a gear reduction starter, so it's not going to start any better than your stock unit. | | | Re: Mopar Performance Lightweight Starter #59831 February 09th 2005 1:25 am | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 458 addict | OP addict Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 458 | Oh really? Do you have a good gear reduction starter you reccomend Hurricane? | | | Re: Mopar Performance Lightweight Starter #59832 February 08th 2005 3:35 pm | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 237 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 237 | I almost bought one of the Mopar Performance starters once..
Then i went out back to my salvage yard and took one off a 3.9 and put it on my 13 to 1 compression 340..... worked fine.
You can almost see it in this shot.

I know a guy who got a mini-starter this way for $20 installed at a junkyard. Mopar performance is a BIG rip-off. | | | Re: Mopar Performance Lightweight Starter #59834 February 08th 2005 9:26 pm | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 709 old hand | old hand Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 709 | All right, time for another stupid question:
Would a starter from a four-banger caravan fit a LA series small block (w/727)? How about a V6 unit?
My starter is fine but I wouldn't mind having an extra, especially if it provides more clearance for headers. | | | Re: Mopar Performance Lightweight Starter #59836 February 08th 2005 10:32 pm | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 709 old hand | old hand Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 709 | Yea, I do want to get the same hedman hedders as you have. I was mostly wondering about starter interchangability but appreciate real-world info on header (whoops, I guess i'd better say "hedder" if i'm gettin' Hedmans) fitment in a 77 B-van. | | | Re: Mopar Performance Lightweight Starter #59837 February 08th 2005 11:25 pm | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | v-6 yes, four cylinder I think so. If I remember right the bolt pattern is the same for all mopar starters, from the 2.2 through the 426 (I know I have run small block starters on a slant six and vice versa), and I know that the minivan starter bolts right up on a slant six. Ergo, bolt patterns must be the same. | | | Re: Mopar Performance Lightweight Starter #59838 February 08th 2005 11:36 pm | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 709 old hand | old hand Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 709 | Thanks Reed, I knew if there was a way to get that slant six info in, you'd find a way!
Have you had a chance to do anything with marty yet? | | |
