Bob and I made a deal today the 77 chopped dodge thats buried in his Garage is now part of my collection .
There's alot that needs to be done with this one as it's very much apart and some what unfinished . How ever i fell in love with this van a few years ago and i'm still excited over it every time i see it .
It's going to be a few weeks before we can get it out I took a few pics and i'll post some of the older photos as i get them . It's hard to take a photo of as it's surrounded by stuff .
I'm so looking forward to putting this next to the Street Van

Joe, congratulations. You have a very unique corral of vans now. Did you ever build that new garage? Looks like your gonna need a bunch of space and more importantly time. Good luck with completing the challenge.

Wookee ,
I know the black Dodge is going in the garage once this one leaves so he can work on it more . It's a step in the right direction they both need to be seen in public .

I really could not believe how nice the black one was considering how long it sat out side under cover.
Both vans need to be on the road again.

If they where Chevys I would have been looking for extra Benjamen's.
Sorry I just can't do Dodges.Even ones with great metal work done to them....

Teds Going to NC on Tuesday for the weekend comming , he's going to be at the Nascar race .
Mean while thanks everyone its been a long summer waiting for it but now that i have it i can make a plan for it .
I was going to send it out for media blasting but im going to see how much i can do my self with what i have , so a bottle of Navel Jelly and some 320 DA paper rags and water and you get great results with just a little time and patients .

Wow, the metal did clean up well. The media blasting would be good too as areas that are ready could be filled immediately but this method gives you time to think and that's important. Good luck!

Thanks everyone I'm very excited to be the owner of this baby . I was very busy today but I managed to put a few ours in cleaning the passenger side up ,I'm 90% done The cooler weather is allowing the Naval Jelly to stay on longer and not dry up and its just eating the rust away . I'm using a small wire brush to get in to the welds and edges with the naval jelly and its working out good .

She's cleaning up Nicely only door Jams and inside the grill area left to do then i start to DA her down . A buddy of mine gave me some 80 grit so i'll use that prior to the epoxy prime .
I also have to start thinking about a color and or theme for this one . I'm leaning towards black or a metallic blue .

Thank you guys its been a long day ! My shitty craftsman compressor bites the big one for real ! I remember when I bought it I asked the sales man if it runs air tools he looks at it and said Yes yes it does see the tool icons ? yeah they run ok for 2 minutes then they crap out . It took me all day to DA her down waiting for the compressor to fill up . I still have to get the back end done and the door jambs im so far behind my goal for priming I hope I can finish by tomorrow before it gets cold again .

well here she is I Da'ed her down with 80 grit and did the best I can do with what I have . I wiped her down as well with thinners before I primed her . I can only hope for the best now . The worst case scenario is when im done I have to have it media blasted . Other wise I wont know how good the primer took till I do some body work .
I have to get back on the street van chop so this will be an in-between project .

Now a nice Hemi crate motor would fit nicely under that dog house!!!!! A mean engine in a mean Ass looking van!!!!!

If only you could clone yourself, then working on both vans at the sametime would be of no problem!!!!!!

Gorgeous! I can't wait to see this van painted after all of your amazing work on top of what was done when you got it. It is going to be one of the baddest rides on the road!

As for the phantom grille, I don't know if that looks like the best piece for a phantom grille you can get, I would recommend trying to get one done by Natural State. Those were some really nice phantom grilles!

they didn't make them for dodge vans plus even if they did they wouldn't have the solid surround bar like this one does . I Love the look of the billet grill im thinking on having one made for the street van .

And Lee I have a set of Zoomies in the garage but that's not the surprise sorry .

I remembered that you had a set of zoomies from a while back so I thought that was going to be it. So....my next guess will be a new high performance engine!!!

Now that grill looks right at home there!! Man what ever you have next must be pretty big to upstage that grill.

As usual very impressed with your work.

So not one, but two killer show vans to hit the circuit in the near future!!!

Joe, thanks for the video. The van has an awesome stance and I do like the wheel/tire combo as they fill out the opening well. What taillights are the openings made for?

What's your plan? Complete this one or the street van?

Randy the tail lights are Corvette just a 70's round style . As for what one im working on im working on Both but I hope to have the street van road worthy this spring . So There's work I can do to this that that only requires time and welding supplies . The other ones needs a few hard parts , and some more time as well in fact Im getting together with My buddy Ted next week he's going to help me Engineer the clam shell door Show worthy and heavy duty then bend a few parts for me that I cant do here because I don't have a sheet metal break .

Cool vid!! I looked at it over and over and the only thing I see is a Bad ass van in the makin'. I see blue tape so I am going to make a couple of guesses Vinyl Top? Chop it more? Close?

Well if anything what ever you do will only enhance it!!

2014 and no more Econolines made... market blunder. The last new 2014 econoline to go to a vanner - DEADLAST
How many mid ford vans can 1 man own? Don't ask stupid questions...
My chopped mid ford will be painted black till they make a darker color.
Grind to Grind... Hot metal will abound the land... IceAge II 'The MeltDown'
My 3D printer will produce a life size 1969 mid ford in 2031... Wait and see...

well guys i had some idea and im making some changes . Insted to the chevy drive line im putting it back to dodge . It needs everything so i have a donor with pretty much new everything . It just seams to make sence to use it and not spend a ton of money on locating and rebuilding crap .
I have also picked out a color called Neptunes Jewel . I did a spray out on this model so i can see how it acts on van body lines .
I'll be pulling the chevy out very soon and preping it for the new drive line .

well what i thought would be easy peasy turned out to be a nightmare . The angle of my lift was to high ( when i tried to lift the motor the host would hit the fire wall ) and putting a jack under the van with the engine host was not going to work either . So i had to use the Jack under the trany and pull the motor out a half inch at a time to get through the high motor mounts made to accomidate the chevy engine and trans .
Pulling it out but the water punmp fitting is not my idea of safe but it held up and worked I kept alot of the wieght on the oil pan and just heaved the motor out .

Now some Finish welding and hole filling , Bob never finished all the welding under Neath the van , SO onward to a long day of welding . And filler panels made to smooth out the fire wall .

[Linked Image]

the frame cleaned up removing the factory splatter welds , since its a tilt front end your going to see everything so I want to clean it up the best I can . It wont be ISCA quality but close to it .

Dude you should have known the motor pull was going to be a bitch. I mean the Chevy motor finally found a good body a Dodge and it wasn't going to give that up easily!!! shocked

I am glad you decided to put a Dodge motor back in, just seems right.
I see you are welding up the opening for the heater/A/C. You know how these Dodges get cold inside and you always want that heater on laugh

As always you are doing one hell of a job!!

Keep the pics comin'!!!

Very nice job on it all! I like it when time is taken to paint the frame as well as filling in everything else. Do you have a time table as to when this will be done or is it just get as much done as time dictates? There are a couple of you guys got some wild things goin on with your vans and just getting anxious to see them completed. Good luck.

No real time table I work on it when im able between everything else . Plus when I'm not feeling cheap and spring for parts or supplies when that allows . I Do have a goal of having it running again by Fall this year . That's why im prepping the front end and chassis so the new drive line can be added and I don't have to pull it out again .
So im focused on the inside frame rail and fire wall as of right now . I still have to mount shocks up front and with the air bags it is a challenge .
Im considering a cantilever system for the shocks and have the shock run parallel to the out side part of the frame .
thanks for checking in !!

Nice work...! I see the wiper motor is out, figured that's for welding and stuff, but it looks cleaner without it... Keeping it that way, or putting it back in...?

What are you going to paint the frame with...? POR, Rust Bullet, or body color...?

when things go bad, you just gotta keep on keepin' on...

well this is a good tec tip that i should do in the body work thread .
Surface rust removal ..
The front end was exposed to the front of the garage leaving it more exposed to moisture . There fore was a bit more rusty .
Anyway today i grabed a bottle or Naval Jelly and Rust Mort to tackle this Job .
Funny thing was i ran all over the jersey shore looking for the Naval Jelly in boating shops when Home depot had it all along .
[Linked Image]

I DA the heavy rust off ..
[Linked Image]
then i apply the Naval jelly and let it do its job for 10 to 15 minuts .
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]t
I take a scrubby and a fine wire brush to agitate the more stubborn areas .
after a rince you have this ..
[Linked Image]
you apply more Naval jelly and work the unclean areas

[Linked Image]
Then you rince it well and let it dry then coat it with rust mort .

[Linked Image]
this is what you end up with you let it dry and it will make a coating that you clean off brfore paint work with water it make a film that portects the metal when dries .

Thanks Guys for stopping in ..
Next im reaching out of my technical skills ability and Designing a cantilever shock system for this Van . Since the air bag takes the place of the original shock placement i have to relocate it . And as with Dodoge they have a torsion bar that bolts to the bottom control arm that pretty much gets in the way of everything when you try to relocate the shock . FOr get using the front the steering is in the way . So i order up specail shocks and hardware today so i can start mocking everything up .
You can see in the photo i made a wooden cantilever a bit over sized for fitment .( it will be made of steal once im done fitting )
The shock will run parallel with the frame and i'll use one inch tubbing with heim joints from the control arm to the cantilever . I hope this will give me the clearence i need to get shocks back on this van .

Note * round bars in pics are to help guage clearences

Ok Moving forward .. I went out to the garage and started to try to figure things out and really didn't paln on doing much due to the high humidity . How ever i was a bit worried if any of it might work so i pressed on making a steel version of the cantilever . I didn't have the right thickness of plate steel laying around but i had to start some where .
The tire hit the wood Buck and i had installed the bump stop to make sure i had the right clearence.
1) In order to make this work i would have to build out the bottom control arm (BOXED) for the 5/8s bolt as i need 3.5 inches of clearence for the torsion bar.
2) I need to make the cantilever a 1/4 inch thinner Just to be on the safe side of the tire clearence .
If im successful this Idea just may work , if not i have a plan "B".

You see the cantilevered shocks in some IRS setups. Should work great. Running them back underneath the body?

I need to think about this. My first thought is that you lose the purpose for the shock using this concept.

Feel free to look it up it's a proven methoud your just relocating the shock and using articulation as a means of travel.

I would find a way to bolt along with weld that shock bracket on the end one that cantilever.

well All other garage projects aside now so its time o get back to work on the chop projects .
Im waiting on a few parts for the shock project so now i'll keep up the restoration part of it .
Cleaning off the rust and grime out of the inside of the tilt Nose So i can primer seal it and do some finsh welding .

When bob built this van he never did anything to protect the bare sheet metal as he though it be painted some time soon , witch never happened .
So i'm still removing rust in hard to get places , i almost took it to the medeia blaster today but i thought id give it a try to do it my self and see what happeneds . Anyway i have a huge sence of accomplishment as its coming along nicely .

Me too but I do not think I can arrange that before I head back to China. Joe has the ultimate collection for my taste since they are all radical projects. So cool!

Enjoy Lee!

well dont think i have been not doing anything , I removed all the rust and dirt from inside the tilt Nose And made some modifications . Prepped and urathane sealed it . That took a week straight to comeplete . I finaly got the pivot pins in for the cantilevers . I drilled out the frame and tached them in place . They will have to be tig welded witch i do not have so the entire front end had to go back together for transport to the fella who's going to do the welding .

A few pics for your enjoyent , Just think it all comes apart again when it comes home to properly paint the frame and what ever else i do to the components .
