While getting to know my engine the other evening, I wondered what the little tubes attached to the manifolds were for. After a little web searching, it turns out its an A.I.R. injection system (smog pump assembly)... Kind of a precursor to the use of Catalytic converters I guess...
Looking at a lot of photos of 350 V8's on google pics, it seems to be commonplace for folks to remove these pipes?
I'm just wondering if the smog pump assembly is necessary and what are the consequences of removing it?
I have a small leak on two of the tubes on the driver side manifoldand I'm wondering do I need to fix it or can I remove it and plug the holes on the manifold....
thanks guys.

I'd remove it if it were mine to prevent it locking up someday and stranding me. The pump injected air into the hot exhaust to assist burning the remaining hydrocarbons left over in the spent exhaust gases. The result was marginal at best and was done (at the time) to satisfy the pointy heads at the US EPA. The pipe connections are (my memory is fried) 1/4" NPT. | | | Re: Smog pump | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 193 member | OP member Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 193 | Yeah, I think the pump is on the way out anyway... Last night I had the engine ticking over and each time I gave the throttle a blip, there was a whining coming from the general area of the alternator/smog pump. When I put my hand on the smog pump it was pretty darn hot... That can't be right surely...
So can I just blank off the manifolds? I'm thinking the 1/4"" NPT nuts are rusted solid. I'd be shocked if they all screwed out without any problems... I may need to drill & tap or weld em up.
I would like to tidy up the engine anyway, theres a lot of tubes and wires going every which way... The more unessecary clutter I can remove the better...

You can just plug the tubes off but the tubes actually stick into the manifold about an inch and a half. While they're not really in the way of the exhaust flow on the stock manifolds if you can get them out it's better. If you remove the manifolds you can drill 'em out and tap 'em pretty easily. Here manifolds without the smog holes are easy to find but I would guess they're harder to locate there.
