My 91 G20 Mark 3 has 201k on the clock and doesn't use oil or water between changes. I am wondering if anyone can help me figure it out. It smokes for about 3-5 seconds on start up then nothing. The smoke appears blue tinted which says oil to me but I am at a loss on it. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like worn out valve seals and guides to me. The heads need to be pulled to replace those (the guides), but with 201,000 miles I would recommend a reman engine.

However, you may be able to get away with just replacing the valve seals in which case the heads don't need to be pulled.

yeah Gotta love Chevy valve seals. If you have good compression and good oil pressure just do the valve seals. If the engines getting tired at 200k, might be time to either replace or rebuild. Good thing is Chevys can be rebuilt cheap. A high performance upgrade would be cool, too. How about a vortec swap?

My "90 started smoking at about 16-17000. Never did get around to fixing it, 133000 now. Still smokes not much more than it ever did. I'm just going to drive it till something really happens then fix it. I took a 5000 mile trip over three weeks in Feb and used a quart of oil. Valvoline 10w30 synthetic. I change the oil about every 5000 miles.

I was thinking valve seals or guides. The engine is a little tired on long hills but outside of that it runs outstanding. I have thought about having it rebuilt and maybe doing some performance upgrades to it when I do but I am unsure what all can be done to this motor. Don't want to V8 it because of gas prices and my love of being able to actually drive it without going broke, lol. Also, is there any quick n easy ways to get the stripes off the side without ruining the paint? I've used a heat gun on the back right corner but it took forever and blistered the crap out of my finger. Thanks for everyone's help.

Heat gun is the way to go. Just heat up the striping and start pealing. Just keep the heat right ahead of where it is lifting and keep steady pressure on it. It is a little time consuming but could be expensive to pay someone.

Waiting till it "goes" might be the cheap way now but will cost more later......at 200,000+ it is due for a re-build.....now days I would check the difference in cost between a good high quality rebuild and a new crate motor...if close the crate motor is the better option.....usually get a very good warrantee.....

Recently purchased (10-2021) a 1991 Chevy G-20 “Shorty”. Past vans are a 1976 Chevy G-10 (purchased new in 1976 & sold in 1995). A 1978 Chevy G-20 Shorty purchased in 2010 and sold in 2015.

I think GM Performance Parts does a 3 year/36,000 mile. Jasper is pretty good, too.
