I thought it was kind of odd that when I removed it the fuel, oil, and temp stayed in the same position.

Wait - Draggnastro you mean to tell me you swapped out the entire cluster and ended up with a second bad speedo, this time - it only reads to 30 mph and the odo still doesn't work? The odds of that happening are very rare.

Did you:
* Look at any corrosion on the circular pin connector harness going to the back of the cluster that is responsible for the VSS?
* Open up the cluster and look at the three pin locations that the speedo snaps into the back of the cluster and look for any sign of bad connections?
* Put an ohm meter on the pin connection at the harness and the vss to check for a short?
* Really really really sure the VSS is working correctly?

The reason I question this is certainly to help - but the fact that the replacement speedo only reads to 30 mph seems to indicate a signal issue of some sort. If the speedo has failed could it produce the same result? I guess, but seems very unlikely to me.

Strange. I have a spare 90-92 speedo but the odo doesn't work on mine either.

....and mine failed because of a circuit board issue so the gears should be intact. In the case you find your replacement has stripped gears as well, you're welcome to have mine smile

speedo always worked fine. The small gears that feed the odo strip very easily apparently.
