I take it your ft end looks similar to this....

I would do the coil thing....

No shame in it for the few extra bucks you would be way happier with new springs, the labor would be simpler and a lot safer also past experience has taught me not to trust cast aluminum under impact situations ( I know there a lot of wheels that are made of cast aluminum, but really I have repaired some in my day, early rubber band wheels and even those were built tougher than what these things look like.
