I can say like if you are off roading then you want to have rough country, if you are running a van like a limo then you want to have Monroes cause they offer a pretty soft ride but I notice most Monroes don't last long. Then Gabriel which is what I use now (used to use Monroe), Gabriels aren't to stiff and aren't to soft, they're inexpensive and they last long for the most part. Thing is regardless of brand most shocks don't last 50K miles, they really only last about 5-15K then they start to sponge up. Bilstein is a different story because of they're design which is exactly why most times they're going to be on a competative vehicle. Also mono tube, dual tube and so on.
But yea you're right 100%, it's user preference and gonna have to buy them and try them out to know. But again, I wasn't looking for a review, just wanted to know what some people are using. Nice van by the way, that thing must stick out at night though being orange as a pumpkin! | | | Re: What shock absorbers tickle your fancy? | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 4,043 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 4,043 | I'm not sure where my 'fancy' is, and I don't know if I want to try and tickle it with a shock absorber.....

Yep it is sporting a set of both monroe gas matics and the monroe magnums.Back when I was still getting the van road worthy. Advanced ordered the monroes. And sent me the wrong front shocks. The only ones they had the right length for the front where the magnums.I had all ready installed the gas matics....... I have well over 30,000 HARD miles on the shocks and they are holding up great..... .......Wookee

But I say to myself now it's a smart moving because most braking action occurs in the front (unless towing, etc..) so in the long run the brakes will wear pretty evenly.
Speaking of road worthy, I'm getting mine all ready for my trip up to NJ. Going up there for about a month then going to rent a u-haul trailer and bring down my grandmother and her belongings so she can live with my parents and I. I'm just waiting for my dynotech driveshaft to make it over here (comes tuesday the 5th) so I can install it. Then it should be road worthy, in the past 7 months I have replaced so much most of which I forgot. Let me see...
Rebuilt Transmission includes new torque converter Replaced rear shocks Replaced radiator cap Replaced fuel pump, tank mount hardware, filler tube grommet Replaced air filter Replaced rear main seal Replaced oil pan seal Replaced spark plugs Replaced wireset Replaced distributor cap and rotor Replaced driveshaft, includes completed shaft, pinion yoke and pinion seal because new shaft is 1350 U-Joint Replaced all fluids (use valvoline only) except the antifreeze Just did a fuel injection cleaning today
But so far this is what I have done in the past 7 months, the transmission, fuel pump, rear shocks, rear main seal, and driveshaft had to be replaced as they were all shot. Everything else was to make it all road worthy.

Had the rear leaf pack rebuilt and added a leaf, reassembled with all new bushings and new hardware throughout. Had entire front-end rebuilt, new everything from the king pins to the steering box, all new tires and my 78 Ford Custom rides down the road with every bit of control my brand new 83 E150 had when I bought it new....
