The overflow tank on my 89 is currently an old radiator fluid container held in place with mini-bungee cords. It was all I had handy when the old motor overheated at a Flying J.

I wouldnt worry except it got hot today and puked antifreeze all over my driveway. It seems to me it needs one, the hose is there, but no tank. i was thinking twin Mickeys fine malt liquor 40 oz bottles. Evan Williams bottles would work, unless you got a capn bottle layin around?

Well, fixed the overheating issue today. Thermostat was caked with rtv, and it was in backwards. Replaced the ECT sensor. Still running a little rich, but better. Next is the exhaust leak. I cant stand next to the van for more than 30 seconds without my eyes watering from the fumes. I think that also may have alot to do with the stumbling issue. So now it holds steady at 180 degrees. YAY!

Getting closer! See what I mean about fixing other people's messes? Also, the computer has a slight learning curve to it and it may still be learning how to run the timing and mixture with the thermostat in correctly and functioning properly. Try disconnecting the battery for about 30 minutes and reconnecting it. That clears the memory in the computer and forces it to relearn.

Running rich could very well be caused by the exhaust leaks. If the exhaust leaks out before the O2 sensor, then the O2 sensor is going to read lean, causing the computer to make the injectors inject more fuel.

Yeah, im having my lime green coffee(Dew) and heading out there to soak the exhaust bolts in PB Blaster and try to bust em loose. Going to chase down any possible vacuum leaks while im in there. Only other issue is once the motor warms up the oil pressure drops to near nothing, so before it goes anywhere im going to drop the pan and install a new oil pump before it grenades itself. Hopefully after all that i can move on to fun stuff like the interior and body work.

Install an aftermarket oil pressure gauge that tells you exactly what the oil pressure is. The stock Ford gauge is very slow to react and reads lower than you think. In my 89 Ford I run both the stock gauge and an AutoMeter oil pressure gauge. The motor in my van has about 25 PSI of oil pressure at idle once it is warmed up but the stock Ford gauge reads close to the bottom of the scale. As soon as the motor comes off idle the oil pressure goes up to 50 PSI. It takes a while, but the factory gauge eventually puts the needle about in the middle of the gauge when the Autometer gauge reads 50 PSI.

Try running 5W-30 oil and use a Purolator, Wix, or Napa Gold oil filter. Do not use Fram. I have had motors gain 5-10 PSI of oil pressure just by putting in 5w-30 oil and changing the oil filter.

Remember, you only need 10 PSI of oil pressure per 1000 RPM. If your oil pressure is below this, then you should inspect the oil pump and the bearings. It might be something as simple as trash blocking the oil pump pickup or a pressure relief valve that needs to be serviced.

I was thinking that Reed, i rarely trust factory guages. Was funny to me because it wasnt knocking or makng any noise. Its also 2 quarts low, fixed that and as soon as i replace the vacuum lines my buddy ran out to get, ill fire it up and see what i got. Hate chasing gremlins. Oh and the exhaust bolts are a no-go. Takin that s%^t to the exhaust shop...
