Putting exhaust on my 91 Econoline with an injected 302. Running long tube headers. Duals with crossover over pipe or single exhaust and what muffler? Looking for sound and performance. Will be running high flow cat or cats accordingly.

When Chris Farley talked about living in a van down by the river, did anybody else think that wasn't such a bad idea?

I would go with true 2.25 dual exhaust, skip the crossover, and run Walker quiet-flow mufflers.

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!

Flowmaster 40's sounds like power, Magnaflo too, just not as loud, Cherry Bomb has a welded muffler similar to the old 40's, they are awesome.

I read a report by Flow Master years ago, they tested true duals 2.5" vs 3" single with a smooth transition at the merger and they said they got more torque from the single 3", I will TRY to find the article

I found this with a fast search, it might help. . . . .

The Benefits of a Single Exhaust System

A single exhaust combines the primary exhaust tubes into one collector. It uses a single pipe to route the exhaust gases out. Single exhausts come factory-equipped on most cars and trucks, and they are generally an efficient method of elimination. An aftermarket single exhaust, like the Borla exhaust or the Gibson exhaust, is designed to deliver major power gains, improved fuel economy and a deep, throaty growl.

There are several benefits of a single exhaust system, such as its lighter weight, lower cost, and increased exhaust gas velocity. The only major drawback of a single exhaust is absolute flow, which is limited to the diameter size of your tubing.

The Benefits of a Dual Exhaust System

A dual exhaust, on the other hand, keeps the exhaust streams from the opposing cylinder banks on a V-configuration engine (such as a V6, V8 or V12 engine) completely separate. Because the main purpose of an exhaust system is evacuation, there is very little that can be done by a dual exhaust system that can’t be accomplished by a single exhaust system. One major benefit of a dual exhaust system, like the American Thunder dual exhaust or the Heartthrob exhaust true dual system, is that it allows increased flow from engine to tailpipe without significantly affecting your ride’s ground clearance.

Whether you decide on a single exhaust or a dual exhaust, you’ll want to choose a performance exhaust made by one of the best brands in the biz in order to ensure optimum performance. Names like Gibson exhaust, Flowmaster exhaust and Banks exhaust craft some of the best performance single cat back exhaust systems and dual exhaust systems.

I found it HERE

I guess since full size vans don't really have a lot of clearance issues when it come to exhaust, single 3" may be the way to go.

If you want, do like I did, use a single in, dual out muffler mounted back at the axle. . . gives you best of both that way. Torque of a single and dual tips out back. Thats what I did with my Astro, everyone loves the sound so far, and it look good too.

Go 3" single to the muffler, 2.5" out the back.

Like this one. . . . FLOW MASTER MUFFLER

My 99 E-350 5.4 is SI/DO and has a deeper tone, and louder sound through that 1 Flowmaster 40 than a pair on the same engine dualed out, the power is great, along with the low end, but is coupled with many other upgrades increasing power.
I'm currently debating on my 73 E-100, going duals, but not sure if I want single in or not, you won't need a crossover or X-pipe with the oversize single going in to balance it. I'm looking at this one, the sound is great, Flowmaster 40's aren't as loud as they used to be, this reminds me of it, listen to the sound clip: http://www.cherrybomb.com/Catalog/Categories/extreme.aspx
