However, how sure are you that it was set right before?

May be worth checking before i head out on the road with it. Just got to change the oil and retighten the alternator bracket and i should be good to go.

SCC ("Spark Control Computer") is another name for the lean burn system. You will need to find the wire that went to your old carb and ground it for the timing test. The computer needs to see that it is grounded for the timing to be set right. Also, be sure that (a) the vacuum pod on the computer still holds a vacuum and (b) the outer ring of the vibration dampener has not slipped giving you an incorrect timing reading. You can check for vibration dampener slip with a piston stop tool and some white out. I can tell you how if you are interested. The outer ring on the dampener in my brother's 83 van slipped giving a timing reading that was 8 degrees retarded! It really made a difference when I fixed that. Be sure the vacuum hose to the distributor is plugged into a source of MANIFOLD vacuum- that is, it has full vacuum at idle. It does not plug into a port on the carb that only gets vacuum when the throttle is opened. it is backwards from a standard distributor. If you are going to be using the lean burn computer to control your timing, you will need to leave all the sensors in the engine and hooked up. You might have some sensors that don't have a place to mount in the 170 head, mainly the coolant temp sensor for the computer. The CTS is a key component for timing control. You need to figure out a way to get that sensor installed and working. Possibly the top tank in the radiator or the upper radiator hose. However, keep in mind it is supposed to be seeing the coolant temp on the engine side of the thermostat, so if it is installed on the radiator side of the thermostat it will take longer for the sensor to tell the computer that the engine is warmed up.

I dont have a timing light, so once i get it fired and running I'll see how she feels and if need be i can borrow a light from someone. Ill check the vacuum line to the dist and all the others. Were you able to find a spare vacuum tree?

I am pretty sure I have one, I just need to find it. You need to get a timing light, a hand held tachometer, and a vacuum gauge at a minimum. All of those can be bought cheaply on Craigslist. TIMING GUNMORE TIMING LIGHTSTachometersTach and timing lightVacuum gauges are cheap and can be purchased at most parts stores. It is a good idea to install one permanently in the van to monitor engine condition. Plus, driving to maximize engine vacuum is a great way to improve fuel economy.

You might be able to scrounge one off of a v-8 or build one using plumbing fittings from the local home improvement store. Just be sure that you get the right threads.

I got it all buttoned up and fired up today. One slight problem. The carb i got is missing the bolt that acts as a lever for the accelerator pump linkage, as well as the seal for where the rod goes through the top of the carb for the accel pump. Maybe a pic would be easier to explain.
