904s could be had behind a 360, and there is a good chance it is a 904 if the motor came out of a non-heavy duty passenger car (so NOT a cop or taxi). If you had to change the front yoke on the driveshaft because the original 87 yoke wouldn't fit into the output of the 77 trans, then you have a 727 transmission. If you were able to reuse the original front yoke from the 87 driveshaft, then the trans is a 904.
The ironic thing is that the original 87 904T that was behind the slant six is actually a BETTER trans than even a 77 727. The 904T had four planetary gears, as many if not MORE clutches and plates than the 727, and the first two gears were slightly lower (mechanically) to assist in better acceleration and fuel economy.

More than likely your 87, because it was originally a /6, had a similar trans (or the A998 or A999).

So according to you Reed, makes it a 727. According to Ram4ever and his diagram in the "what did you do to your van" thread its a 904 by the shape of the pan. It doesnt really matter at this point, i have the yoke i need, i still need to figure out the shift linkage and run one heater hose still.
