I have been wanting to do the fiberglass thing. Haven't been able to get a definite answer on whether I can fiberglass this piece. I have a fiberglass repair kit with enough stuff to do it. I could always try..if I ruin it or it doesn't work, I trash it and build a wooden one.

I am sorry , Nothing personal there about that s#%* JB Weld. But I am a professional welder and have been for forty plus years. I do not like the stuff because once you use it and it does not work then I have to figure out how to clean it up and get the job done. If I had it in the first place it really would be a five minute job. There is not much that can't be fixed if it is done properly. [/quote]
AMEN
professional welder since 1989 myself i HATE that sh#^

Fiberglass is not a great material for fixing ABS plastic. Unless you mold the entire thing out of fiberglass, inside and out, it will eventually remove itself from the ABS and you'll be left with 2 separate pieces.

You can add pieces of ABS as supports, with a soldering iron as a sort of welder (they sell a plastic welding kit that is basically a special soldering iron and some various plastic welding rods). Then use your newfound bonding adhesive as insurance. Either that or use the current piece as a positive and make a fibeglass mold, then a new fiberglass piece from that mold.

I have had nothing but bad luck with JB Weld repaired parts, none of which were done by me (I have a mig welder for over 35 years and access to a tig).

Ripper, Thank you for that insight, I did not know if it would work or not, just threw it out as a idea. . . I am glad someone who knows better than me spoke up.

i see you've already fixed the problem, but to fix various interior trim pieces in different cars ive had over the years, ive use zip ties and a lighter. Light the end of the zip tie and let it melt, then use it like solder. Worked great for me, just sand it down smooth and dye/paint the piece and it looks like new. Kind of a home grown idea, but ive done it and it works.

I would like to learn how to do the fiberglass molding and maybe make a few extras for others.

Now enough talk about the JB weld please. Everyone has their opinion, let it be, let it be, yea let it be....uhhh, you know the rest.

My purpose here was to get a rare plastic piece repaired. With the advise of Uncle Fester, I got the piece fixed with Q-bond.His suggestion worked out the best. Now I am just trying to figure the best way to add some light weight strength and use it. Then I can Paint it, I know how to accomplish that. Next I will reupholster the panels, More of a novice than a virgin on that subject, run some wires for switches, then put it up to enjoy. Thanx for the input thus far gang. More soon on the progress.
