The Q-bond worked great! The plastic overhead console is now fixed. Just need to paint and recover the 4 panels. http://s1175.photobucket.com/albums/r639/mlarky1957/?action=view¤t=IMG_2590.jpgThere was one long wide crack that was a bit of a challenge, but I managed to get it sealed. I'm still going over a couple of ways to add support to it so there (hopefully) won't be any more cracks. Still need to figure out how to mount the CB radio in the thing, and a few switches. First of course run the wires for functions, and after I decide which CB antenna to use ( budget will also be a factor...), run that cable. But I am one big step closer. Thanks for the Q-bond recommendation Fester! Now I will need to tackle some other trim piece repairs. As for the wife's convertible glass re-glueing, I made several calls to upholstery shops. None wanted to give advice other than quote a repair fee. One even said I would need a whole new top without even seeing the car...$2500? Yikes!! I finally called a body shop I had worked with, and he told me exactly how to fix it. He sold me a tube of 3M windshield adhesive and it worked great. I am now my wife's hero again. | | | Re: ABS plastic repair question | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 868 Likes: 2 old hand | old hand Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 868 Likes: 2 | I had a crack in the lifter valley of a 390FE engine in my '63 mercury that was spraying coolant onto my cam. Ground out the crack a little bit with a carbide burr and filled the gouge with JB Weld. Engine ran for another several years without issue *shrugs* I think JB Weld is ok in some instances, lol. Just has to be the right application of the stuff.

I do not like the stuff because once you use it and it does not work then I have to figure out how to clean it up and get the job done. If I had it in the first place it really would be a five minute job. There is not much that can't be fixed if it is done properly.

I am however SOLD on Q-bond! Now with the panel cracks repaired, before I repaint and cover it, could use some suggestions on how to add some support(s) to the panel, preferably on the panel itself. Here's a link to a photo of the back side. http://i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r639/mlarky1957/IMG_2602.jpgBeen running some ideas in my head. Probably something in the middle, like thicker plastic strips, maybe some metal straps, either side of the drop down middle section ( for lack of a better description), to keep middle from flexing and creating new stress fractures. The original plan was to put my CB in the middle, and switches on the drivers side of the panel. Now I am wondering if the weight might be an issue for the old plastic. My buddy is trying to convince me to scrap or sell the plastic piece and create one from wood to avoid the problems. | | | Re: ABS plastic repair question | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 9,854 Likes: 8 Festerus Vannimus | Festerus Vannimus Joined: May 2007 Posts: 9,854 Likes: 8 | Could you maybe add some strips like you suggested, of this steel or thicker plastic, and then fiberglass over the WHOLE back to thicken it up ? I admit I do not know alot about fiberglass, so I throw this out as a MAYBE only. . . .
