I started to ry the swap from non-tilt to tilt column in my 83 Dodge shorty today and was stymied by the first step removing the roll pin in the bottom of the non-tilt column. I just can't get a good angle on it to whack it with a hammer.

Anybody have any tips on getting these out? The FSM just says "remove the roll pin."

Use a c-clamp with a smaller pin and press it out

Reed, you're talking the one down by the steering box right? If you haven't invested in a set of pin punches nows the time.If I remember correctly you may have to turn the steering wheel a 1/4-1/2 turn to get a better swing with a suitable hammer.Good luck my friend.

I was gonna say use a small drift punch to remove the roll pin. Lloyd is co-rrect.

OK, thanks for the input. I guess it is time to get some more tools (yay!). I was trying to use a hammer and a straightened out piece of a pegboard hook, but that just wasn't working. I was turning the wheel every which way, trying to get it from above and below, and it just wasn't happening.

Spray it down with PB Blaster, or penetrant of your choice.

i did the swap out in my '86 about 5 years ago and i must have used a hammer and punch, can't really remember now. i do remember i had the wheel turned a little to get a better whack at it. i think i had to have a piece of metal a foot or two long against the punch to get a good enough whack at it. i don't know why i can't remember clearly now but i do remember struggling badly on the whole process. good luck.
