On your battery tray comment, it is nuts how some parts look the same until you lay them next to each other. When I replaced a section of the rear door sill from a donor van it looked exactly the same but was 1/2" taller than the one in Lukes van.

funny u should say that ken,I found out when I made my 1st gullwing that not all vans are same size!! they are panels tacked welded together to make a van and no 2 are alike!!!! annd 1/2" to top of mold to adjust for the door openings.....seems like the bottom of the door is square....but tops are not? crazy lol

And the same is/was true for the Vanagons. The last years they where manufactured in Austria from premanufactured parts from Hannover, Germany. The got the both sides premanufactured, and sometimes the found a difference in lenght up to an 1" or more frown

The body lines are slightly different here and there some are crisper than others but so far things seem to be pretty good from the 85 to 78.
I got more done on Saturday a few more passes with the welder and the ass of her should be welded up!! cheers yayThanks for all the comments guys

Cut some strips of body sheet metal and "back" those gaps
welds look great so far.It is tempting to just co ahead and apply filler now.Keep spot welding untill all you have are a solid weld formed with spot welds.....
If you leave even small gaps they will swell after a few years and leave tracer lines in the filler.....
