I discovered that you must use the rocker arm shaft that came from the factory with the hydraulic rocker arms. The oiling holes in the shaft are drilled in a different orientation than the holes in the mechanical rocker arm shaft. If you use a mechanical rocker arm shaft with a hydraulic valve train the oil won't reach down to the lifters to pump them up and you won't get oil out the tips of the rockers. I documented it Here. The noise in your slant might just be oil starvation due to the incorrect rocker arm shaft. I didn't know the oiling holes were different between mechanical and hydraulic lifter motors.

I still got a massive oil leak i cant locate. Thinking its the bolts where the alternator bracket bolts down on the side of the block, i got it slowed down, but not stopped. Unfortunately im still screwin with it a little since i still need to drive it until the new motor comes my way. Thanks for the heads up Reed.

I installed mine with the holes facing upward away from the head, See, I told ya you had to drill out the hole in the hydraulic rocker shaft lol!

Have you tried running a bead of RTV sealant along the seam where the head and block meet?
I used some old gunky hydraulic rocker arms and pushrods when I converted my brother's slant to hydraulic. When I first started the motor up, the lifters weren't getting nay oil pressure because the passages in the rocker arms and pushrods were clogged with crud. The motor sounded horrible. Obvious top end valve train noise as well as an ominous bottom end noise. My brother put in a can of Marvel Mystery Oil and the passages cleaned out and the motor quieted way down. Now it runs very quiet and has lots of power. It has over 20 inches of vacuum at idle.
My point is that if you are hearing what you think is a rod knock or bottom end noise, you might just be hearing the lifters not working because they aren't getting oil due to the oiling holes in the rocker arm shaft pointing thew wrong way.
Sorry I led you astray on that point. Hopefully using the hydraulic rocker arm shaft with the hole drilled out and the oiling holes pointed the right way will quiet your motor down. Let me know how it goes.

I pulled the valve cover, undid all the bolts for the rocker shaft, flipped it and reinstalled everything, fire it up and lo and behold.... NO MORE NOISE!!!!! Ordering the carb today and this thing may, just maybe a reliable well running van again. Oh yeah, had to re-tighten the manifold bolts too, they were comin a little loose.
