Glad to see you made it home. I wouldn't be to worried about damage to the engine from overheating. But I'll tell you the Chevy transmissions don't handle heat well at all. I burned up a 700R4 in a two hour trip just because of a clogged radiator. Once you get things straightened out, I always suggest installing an external transmission cooler.
Good luck with you project, and please keep us posted. chevy

The rads in these vans can look fine but be clogged up and not working correctly.
a stuck stat will also do as described.
unlike foreign cars SBC can a take a little over heating.
Just do not keep running it like that.
It might be the reason the van engine was sold after a new engine was put in it.....

First snow..already had ours 2 weeks ago but very unusual. With the leaves still on the trees branches down and power out for some folks for weeks.

Good luck with your van...I'm sure you will have plenty of time to read up on it over the winter. Put some pics up of a Russian winter some time.

cheers

Hey everybody!

I'm going to pull out my engine and overhaul it.
I have a stickers "GM Performance Goodwrench" on valve covers.
So, I heard that it's not stock small block, but during overhauling I need to order new parts and I dont know exactly what's the difference between my engine and stock engine.

I still have problems with coolng system and oil pressure. I think, best way to repair it - stripe the engine, clean it and check what's happened. I'm going to do it by myself with helps of some more experienced engeneers from my city (really not too many guys may repair small block - I mean, guys that knows what they must to do).

Maybe somebody know any blogs or forums, where was described process of small block rebiulding, step by step with photos?

I'm really very serious about this work, but I have a lot of questions! At first - about quality parts. Advice will be very useful for me.

I'm going to add photos of my work during process.

I'm going to order soon first part of spares, like new water pump, some others cooling system spares, door seals etc. And I have two questions:

1) What water pump should I order?
ACDELCO Part # 251230 OE Design; Stamped Steel Impeller;Includes Mount Bolts $56.79
or
ACDELCO Part # 252595 Does Not Include Mount Bolts
PUMP KIT,WAT THREADED POWER STEERING BOSS $24.89

Cant understand diffirence between two pumps. Only w-w/o mounting bolts?

2) For example thermostat: STANT Part # 45358 Premium Thermostat; 180 Degree Superstat (2 1/8" x 29/32" x 29/32")

What means this mesurement in inches?
How I may check my thermostat for appropriateness.

Thanks for support!
