Something let loose on the lower end of my lil slanty. I found a 360 out of a 75 motorhome for $200. Besides motor mounts and bell housing what will be needed? Its a 3spd w/OD can I keep that? does anyone know which bellhousing will work? I'm not sure I want to fix the 6 when it ran good and the gas milage was good i liked it, but all this year its been bad on gas. I got used to that but not the lack of power maybe I'm ready for a v8.

360's can be a bit of a pig on gas, so even a bad running /6 may not be as bad as the 360 will be. FYI. smile It all depends on how it's built and ran. Not sure about the rest for ya, other than what you've already covered. Look forward to seeing what you end up with and how it works smile Good luck!

New radiator, new transmission bellhousing, new exhaust, motor mounts, fuel line, some new engine wiring.

My vote is fix the slant six. That would be easier and cheaper. Have you had the problems properly diagnosed as to what is making the noise in the bottom end of your slant six? What year is your van?

Ive been doing quite a bit of work to my /6 lately, and they arent really that hard to work on if you listen to the people who know these things. Buttt..... If i had a well running 360 and trans for 200 bucks, sorry Reed i'd still switch em. That being said, what year is your van? If its old enough i may need some / parts if you go 360 with it.

The 360's are always prone to sticking valves aka sucking air in. They are also gas pigs. If you want to go V8 at least do yourself a favor and go 318 or even a 400/440 BB. I had a mid 70's Tradesman with a 400 in it.. plenty of room... and it got the same mileage as a 360.

I'm with Reed on keeping the slant BUT...If you should do this dispickable thing :)keep in mind that the 360 crank may not have a pilot bearing for the 833od nor maybe even be drilled to accept a bearing. Also keep in mind that the 833od is not a strong trans for v8 usage, behind a stock 318 and not hot rodded to much maybe ok,behind a 360(read a few more horses and a couple pounds of torque)not the best trans.Just food for thought, good luck

My van is an 86 Swb. It would be easiest to fix the /6 I have a good motor in what's left of my 65 stepside, but fixing it and going back to putting along isn't what I want to do maybe some upgrades are in order while the motors out. Eventually I have a dream of a 12v cummins powering the van but that's a pile of cash and a lot of fabrication away. If I hot rod the 6 now I can use it in a future roadster project I guess.

You actually don't need to do much to really wake up the slant six. 2 1/4 inch exhaust coming off the stock manifold, playing with the timing curve, calculating your dynamic compression ratio and milling the head to achieve about an 8:1 dynamic compression ratio, dumping the lean burn controlled carb and timing will also help a bunch. Doing those simple modifications can really improve performance and economy.
