As soon as it cools down ill fix that. Changed the muddy oil. got to get the exhaust welded back up. Carb is severely out of tune, it will only run on choke and the choke doesnt seem to want to kick off. Maybe time to order a new carb? Oh yeah, and i would call about a new carb except for some reason my phone has been saying no service for the last hour... good lord...

It take a while for the choke to open up. Are you using the correct Carter one barrel carb choke to go with your Carter carb?

Reed, im using the choke that was on the motor/carb when i got it. It looks to be stock. I'll check the idle mixture screw tomorrow. Ran out of light and patience today. The choke does stay on for quite some time. More buggers to work out....

They aren't electrically assisted and rely entirely on exhaust manifold heat to make the bimetallic spring expand and pull the choke open. You can track down and install an electrically assisted choke from a 70s era car equipped with a Carter BBS, or you can order an electric choke retrofit kit from CarbsOnly. See HERE. I installed one of the CarbsOnly kits on my brother's 83 Dodge van and it is much better than the factory system. HERE is an article all about adjusting the choke on a slant six carb. Can you describe what the choke is doing? It should close fully when the motor is off and cold. As soon as the motor is started, the choke pulloff diaphragm should pull the choke open ROUGHLY 1/4 inch. The actual amount will vary ad you should get the correct specification. The choke should open fully within several minutes of the motor being started, usually less that two in a warm climate. Have you checked to make sure your choke pulloff diaphragm isn't blown?

Opened up just a little bit, then as it warmed up gradually kicked open all the way. I got the carb adjusted so that it idles, but when i shut it down i could see some mist and liquid fuel coming from inbetween the carb body and the throttle plate. Im going to take it back apart and double up the gaskets like the article in /6 forum said to help it seal a little better. Realistically i think its probably about due for replacement. But i can work with it to make it work for the time being.
