ok , everyone else on here doing body work and painting their vans has inspired me to start on mine ,
May not be painted till next year though .

oh , the only plan for sure is , im going to have the wiper cowl chromed , and id like to have it lowered like Catfish's GMC.
and this is the only thing i have to drive .

So whats the best way to start sanding on this van , the paint is already faded , so it shouldnt be to hard , i just dont want to do it by hand .
I have a palm sander that i think would be alot faster , and i know i have to just watch what i do , can i use 80 grit sand paper or what should i start with , at least to get the edges of the stripes as smooth as the rest of the body .

try a porter cable electric da (dual action) sander. a palm sander is for wood, not paint. the electric da takes the same production paper as an air-powered da, but instead of running a compressor and an air line, you only need an extension cord. you'll need at some 120/240/360/600 grit rolls. it's expensive, but buy the best you can. cheap discs load up too quick, or lose the 'cut' faster.

don't sand it if your not planning on painting it, primer will let water get to metal underneath. next year, you'll be sanding the primer AND the rust off...

good luck make sure you have a sealer handy when your done , you don't want to waste your time sanding then find rust next time you start back on your project .

Agreed! If you are just painting, wait until you are ready to paint before sanding.
