The painter and I did some flake and candy test panels today. I think we worked out a solution but we ran into a big problem. The mask vinyl does not stand up to multiple coats of flake, etc. It started to peel badly. He was using regular clear. It might have been better had he used the intercoat clear stuff. I don't know.

It did work well enough for me to imagine what it might have looked like though. It wasn't going to look that great. This custom stuff is harder than I thought. We tried a few other things and came up with a new plan. Since I have the decals on the van already we are going to spray the candy under the flake. We might even use a different gold basecoat inside the panels. Then we will pull up the decals and shoot the flake.

In retrospect it may have been smarter to do the flake, then mask out the lines, then do the candy. Hopefully the result wont be too subtle.

The first pic shows the mask peeling up. He did a bit of candy on the edge over the flake.

The second pic the candy is under the flake. In the light it is just as sparkly as the first test.

Looking good. Too bad they don't know how to use the correct masking tape & freehand lay out the lines. That's crazy money they wanted to lay them out for you.
I would also be worried if they sand the van with 1200 before putting on any other colors. 1200 seems too fine & the next coats of paint won't stick properly. Brad

Maybe they could spray the van with this 5-headed gun.

I'm trying not to freak out about the mistakes. Hopefully it will still work out. I think they can at least get the gold evened out. But this custom stuff is a lot of trial and error when you don't know what you are doing. Definitely should have put on the tape lines after the flake. It is possible the result with the candy under the flake will be ok though. Maybe I should pull the lines and just do the flake.

looking at the pictures again it does look like you guys shot test panels......
that is a good thing
sanding that flake back off would be a PITA

what most people do is shoot a base color first.Gold is a good base color for flake. Then the flake in the clear.Wet sand it out smooth..
lay out the tape lines and shoot the final color over top.
remove the tape.Apply a final coat of clear.......

Depending on what color you want the lines determines when you lay them down.

The TV guys really make this stuff look way too easy......

The other painter did some more tests today and came up with something that might look better. I'm considering not doing the big flake inside the panels with the lines. Maybe just doing micro flake over the whole van. That way they can do the lines and the fades and make it look clean. I really want the big flakes but I don't want it to look like a mistake.
