I stopped by the shop today. It doesn't look like much progress but they have done a fair amount of sanding and priming. They were blocking the sides out with 150 grit. Lots more work to go.

How many coats of primer do you think they should be doing? It seems like they are priming the areas where they did bodywork but not priming the entire van so far.

As long as the factory paint was still in good shape and adhered to the van well, there is no real need to prime the entire van. Some like to do a full prime just so the color looks exactly the same, but not necessary if using a color that is not transparent.

It had been repainted once and the second coat was peeling in spots. They did DA sand the whole van down and removed a lot of paint. I think all of the newer paint and down to bare metal in some areas. Also they do plan to primer the whole van once before they block it the final time. I guess what they are doing is sound.

Hi Guys,

I got a couple pictures from the bodyshop today. They tell me the final primer is done on the sides of the van. Still a bit of work left before it's ready to paint though.

It is taking a bit longer than I hoped to get this done but I think it is going well so far. The painter was on vacation so that is part of the delay. At this point he is just going over the some detail body work and then wet sanding the van before we take it over to paint booth.

Here is a shot I took trying to show how he is making the driver door line up with the body. It was way off before. You can't see much of anything from the photo but it looks good now.

Here is the color I plan to use for the main color. It was used on the Prowler and the Jeep Wrangler. It is real similar to the a color used on PT Cruiser too.

The thing I am dealing with now is graphics. The painter does not want to lay out the interlocking line design with fine line tape. I have been looking into having a stencil mask made by a vinyl sign shop. I am cool with that since I can lay out the design the way I want it on the computer. But the painter still has to apply the stencil and he's worried about that as well now. How would you guys do this design?

I also need to pick out the metalflake and the color for the burnt orange fades around the panels. Anyone know anything about working with metalflake? It is hard to visualize how a color of flake and base color will work together.

Any pointers on doing the graphics? Should I find someone who can do the fine line tape stuff?
