I highly recommend you at least spend some time browsing www.slantsix.org That website has a wealth of information about anything you could ever want to know about the slant six.

Manifold installation article

Your manifolds are probably fine, but you need new head studs and/or two or three new intake to exhaust manifold bolts/studs. After 20+ years and thousand of heat cycles, I think it can only be expected that the bolts would break.

The manifold to cylinder head 5/16-18-24 x 1.88 studs, can be bought from silver-seal.com.

Brass nuts are Dorman part # 680-001 or # 849-001 (single/bulk pack).

This link and this link are also worth reading about the attaching hardware for slant six manifolds.

When it comes to gaskets, I have never had a problem with Felpro between the head and the manifolds, but I really like remflex ( www.remflex.com) gasket for the exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe junction.

You 87 slant has the notoriously bad "lean burn" computer controlled ignition and carb on it. I highly recommend you ditch both and convert to a non-computerized Holley 1920 and HEI ignition. Both swaps are covered on www.slantsix.org .

The slant does have a few differences from the v-8, but I do believe it is the better design. It is a quite capable motor when properly tuned up.
