Hi everyone! Due to a knocking noise that will not go away, i need to pull the 4.3 V-6 from my 1995 Chevy G-20. It seems dropping the motor from the bottom of the van is the way to go from what i've read on the message boards. Do any of you experienced Van Vets [Wink] have any tips and tricks before i take on this project?

Out the bottom is not the best way. Thats actually probably the worst way. Remove the grille, radiator, rad. support, and a few little things in that area and it comes right out the front.

This is the thread I made while swapping my engine. Hope it helps.

the bottom is the tough way unless you are a pro. take it out the front it is easy, unless you have a body lift or a way to get the body about 3 foot in the air

Wow! ok i will hold off then. I scored some factory service manuals on ebay. I went out there and had a look at it. I have the grille off of it allready (installed a transmission cooler) and the radiator support looks to be all one piece and it's spot welded to the body....DOH!

OK you guys are right!!!!! i took a look at it againand there is an upper panel that does remove!!! I see it now! I assume it's like any other motor removal then? remove all of the external stuff and out it comes?

As for the motor, thats a long story in itself. This motor has a knock that sounds like a lifter, only shows up when the motor is warm, and loud as hell. I have replaced all of the lifters (roller ones at that, very expensive), disconected the torque converter and removed the belt, trying to track this noise down. I have tried different grades of oil and checked the exaust system for leaks. As best as i can tell, its coming from the center of the engine, camshaft area. At least thats what my stethescope tells me. I only can describe it as a hard metalic tap, not a deep knock like a rod or a main

I live in Ft. Worth Texas. The oil pressure is what i'm going to check tonight. The dash gauge is showing good pressure when cold and it drops a bit once the engine warms up. I will check it with a real mechanical gauge because we all know how accurate those electric ones are [Wink] har har har what gets me it only does it once the engine is warmed up. When it's cold, it sounds like a normal motor. Its the loudest when you let off the gas after a high speed run (exiting off of the freeway is a good example) Freaky!
