I am looking to buy a new capacitor for my stereo system. I have a lighting audio 1 farad right now that is starting to wear out. The remote turn on is having a bad connection inside the cap. THere is so many caps to choose from and I was just wondering what you guys are running. I have a factory stereo with a 800W Crunch amp and sealed 10" Alumapro sub.

Personally, I'd say forget the cap, and put in an auxiliary battery. You'll get so much more use out of it, and your lights will never dim.

If you check out the forums at caraudio.com, there's a ton of info there, and those in the know will quickly explain why capacitors are a bad idea. I used to run a lightning audio cap as well, until I started getting into learning more about car audio. A second battery will be much more dependable, plus you can still add on lighting and such.

FWIW, you can run up to 1000 watts on a single car battery if you have a standard 60-80 amp alternator.

I disagree with that, Boot.

I have two deep cycles in my boat, one just to drive the stereo amps with a 1 farad between them. The cap will get the discharge much quicker than the battery alone.

If I remember correctly, it was a Monster but it's buried too deep in the gunnels to have a quick look at.

Well i was looking into a Kinetic capcell and saw it is as much a cap. The kinetic is equal to 100.... 1 faead caps. But still looking into it. At some point I will be having a bigger system in the mid. So i was leaning more towards the capcell.

It's for the quick surge during heavy bass, I put 2 in due to getting my hands on them for nothing, I've never entered a competition where they test your system with a meter so I've no clue the difference.

A capacitor is in most basic terms, a short term battery. Yo can charge it.. it will hold a charge, but it is used up in an extremely short period of time. In Audio, it's like having a mini reserve and yes, typically, it's used to help offset the power consumed during a bass hit. Again, that's about all it's good for.. You can add a deep cycle battery in place of the cap. This way you have essentially a whole crap load of caps.. You can add onto the electrical system without worry of overloading it and yo have the massive reserve tank which is the deep cycle battery to crank it up as loud as you possibly can. until you drain the batt of course.. keep in mind a deep cycle battery has no real problem with being drained a few times.. your standard auto battery on the other hand does NOT handle full discharges very well.

Yeah..... I know I know.... It's NOT a van... But if you squint, It could be a REALLY long van?

You can't charge a deep cycle battery from an alternator without something to restrict the amperage, or risk burning the plates up, 3 were enough for me to learn the lesson. If you are looking to play it with the engine off, use a deep cycle battery, and charge it with a 2 amp battery charger, as they are designed to slow charge. If you are just adding a system to listen to as you drive, running from the alternator, get a built unit, a 200 amp is the best suggestion with a good conventional battery, I've had years of great service.
BTW I have old school underrated amps that push near 200 watts higher than what they are rated at, I have a 500x2, 800x2, and 400x4 in my van with a power hungry wheelchair lift. The only thing I suffer from is the lift degrading the battery when it's under heavy use as I enter/exit multiple times with the engine off. BTW when I turn the amps up and run heavy bass my lights shine bright and totally unaffected during hitting.
