You can use a section of piano hinge and it can open high enough as long as the hinge is made up like the one Matchstick posted. Yo will see the hinge from the outside though.

As far as an actuator, you can add a pivoting mechanism like I did with mine and use an electric linear actuator to open and close the door.

yep the key to door height with the piano hinge is having the roll of the hinge right in front of the door skin. it works out pefect.

the hinges I made were 14 gauge and I bought 6 feet of it from grainger for like $20. However I only use 6 inches of hinge for each hinge so I was able to make six sets of hinges for $20.

don't gut the door. you'll only ruin the structural integrity of the door. i learned that the hard way. it saves you almost no weight. if you have the right shocks it's un-neccesary. mark I have a mint mid ford slider that I can make a fiberglass door from if you're interested. 500 is the price for the door. 600 gets you all the hinges, shocks and locks.

i was looking at my door the other day and realized that i will only gain about a 5lb loss by gutting mine since its got a window in it. i still need to get some struts ordered for it and get it all set up.

You can see my pictures of the hinges under my gull wing or clam shell threads. The actuator mechanism I don't know if I ever posted pics anywhere. I'll have to take some and post for you.

Not an early Chevy, this Early Econo was sporting a set of factory barn door welded together and Gull winged.....

[Linked Image]

He also used the side door handle and the factory latched in the bottom of the doors.

Here is a Connecticut area 1st gen sporting a Gull wing

[Linked Image]

I am pretty sure this one is a fiberglass door.......
