Hey Shaggy whoever built my van went the cheapest way possible. That includes the cheapest name brand carburetor on the market also known as the edelbrock 1405. I have tried everything to get those secondaries to open up. One more rebuild and thats it. spend a little more money on a bit nicer carb.

Hmmmmm.
So edelbrock are good carbs but the one I have is the budget model and is junk ? According to their website the way I read it is that the 1405 is a factory rebuild of a 1406 carb which is a more commonly used carb. Might as well stick with the Rochester so.

just because one person has a problem with a carb does not mean they are JUNK......
I had the same carb on my early here and it was brand new and ran great right out of the box.......
Fine rust that was in the tank at the time helped to screw that carb up.
Sorry I also DO NOT deal with some body else's used problems.
When it comes to carbs I spend the extra bucks and go new.
If you can luck out and find a good running Q Jet they run good.Finding a good running one that does not have issues is the problem.
A good remaned Q Jets costs more or equil to a brand new Edelbrock........

also depending on the intake you are using the two different carbs bolt up different.
the Edlebrock carb will directly bolt up to an edelbrock manifold. You might need an adapter plate to bolt down the Qjet to the Edelbrock manifold.
I know for sure you need an adapter plate to bolt an Edelbrock down to a cast iron GM manifold.......

Well the Qjet that came off the old engine runs fine and will bolt up to the new engine (Edelbrock performer manifold).
What I wanted to know is would the Edelbrock carb be a better choice or should I stick with the Rochester and sell on the Edelbrock carb. The edelbrock one came with the rebuilt engine I bought and hasn't been run yet.

Sorry guys don't mean to bust on your carbs that you bought with your hard earned cash. Gosh darn things just get frustrating after a while.

The edelbrock carb will require a step down pipe adaptor fitting to connect to my fuel line. The current fitting is too big to for the fuel intake hole on the Edelbock. Anyone know what size I will need?
