I did some Photoshopping trying out different colors. I always thought I wanted a black van but they are pretty common. A gold one might be more unique. I was thinking of the name "Goldie Boxx" if I went gold. Has that been used? If I do the stripe I want to get holoflake with the black or metalflake with the gold. Also since I don't have AC I am thinking the roof should be silver with the black or white with the gold. | | | Re: Black or Gold for my 77 Chevy? | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,463 Likes: 12 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,463 Likes: 12 | I'm doing black body with a white roof on mine, so I'm partial to that. Some flake and crystal too. We think pretty much alike don't we?
A black body will be ruthless when it come to exposing any ripples in the body... It takes tons of block sanding to make it look like the vans you see on showvans.com
I've seen many shades of gold, and the size of the pigment can vary all over the place too. Hard for me to say much about gold without seeing the actual paint...
Clear skies!

Looks awesome!
Check out "Sun Bug" Gold. VW had a beetle called a Sun Bug and it had a really neat shade of gold painted on it.

Wow, did I say that out loud Maybe add some black to it tho. Maybe along the bottom? The roof paint, there is a very good reflective paint. I think it comes in white and silver. You can spray or brush it on and it's supposed to self level. It has particles in it that are supposed to reflect most heat and UV rays. We used it on the Madhouse van, but I don't remember what it was called. | | | Re: Black or Gold for my 77 Chevy? | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,170 old hand | old hand Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,170 | I'd say gold.
...and if you add a copy your color layer, and run a noise filter on it, you can get a metallic finish for your PS file. Play with the layer modes to go from fine to deep metallic. | | | Re: Black or Gold for my 77 Chevy? | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 453 addict | OP addict Joined: May 2009 Posts: 453 | Thanks for all the comments! I think the gold is winning so far. The body is fairly straight but I understand black is a lot harder to get done properly. I am not sure about what shade of gold. There are a whole lot to chose from. I don't want it to be too muted but I don't want it to look yellow. I like the paint on this hotrod but it is a candy so I imagine out of my price range: I also like this chevy but wonder if it is too yellow: I totally need a new bumper for the front. So far I haven't had any luck finding one. The back is still chrome and in ok shape. I am not sure about the wheels. I like the torq thrust style but see a lot of them. I am thinking slotted mags or cragars would be cool too in 17s or 18s. Has anyone seen big slotted mags? Or I might go with smoothies or cragars with stock size tires. I plan on lowering the front 3" and am not sure what will fit. I will look into the reflective paint. Did it seem to make a difference? I might put in air down the road but that is a ways off i think. I was also thinking about a ragtop sunroof like this one: I have been playing around with the noise filter in Photoshop but mostly on the stripe area. Maybe if the whole van was metallic it would make it look more gold and less yellow? What about the entire thing in gold metalflake? Too much? | | |
