Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the modern mopar Hemi engines (5.7 or 6.1) will dimensionally fit in a 71-75 b-series van? I know big blocks don't fit exactly due to the floor boards, but curious if anyone has looked at the dimensions and thought about doing this conversion? I know the NAG1 5 speed auto tranny they put in the LX/LC cars is very nice too and mated with a modern hemi could be a sweet setup in a van. Only real problem I see is the output shaft on the NAG1 is for a independent rear suspension, so may not accept a yoke that would used a U-joint... other than possibly just not fitting all together! Anyway, toss out any info you have or ideas?

I just measured the 5.7 l hemi in my 08 ram truck and just eyeballing straight down from the widest point to the widest point it is 27 inches . I think I measured Phoenix once and it was 27 inches so it just might be feasable

440's fit well

Although 392's don't fit well in Ford's angel

Also I heard modern Hemi's use differential and tranny sensors as well. Unless you plan to scrap the puter and go old school you may need everything

The motor mounts are not the same as the old LA/Magnum style mounts so those would have to be fabbed. If I'm not mistaken the bellhousing pattern is the same as the LA/Magnum style engines.

I'd love to put a 6.1 in one of my van!

Doc, 440 in the van, what year? 71-75?

As for the 6.1, yah, since I'm a member of the LXForums.com, occasionally someone does an upgrade and a 6.1 & trans comes up for sale so was thinking about how hard/possible it would be. Also, there is this:

Ready-To-Run 6.1L Hemi Crate Engine

Complete 6.1 kit, enginered for retrofit into older, non computer controlled, non emissions vehicles. Rated at 425 hp with Mopars plug and play components which take the guess work out of the late model Hemi engine swap.

Meeeeeeeeee to , BUT I was offered a 330 Hemi out of an old Desoto back in '86 when we Bought the Phoenix new and Thats when I measured the opening. The old hemi was 31 inches from valve cover to valve cover so I imediately passed but I did just wish it woud have fit. That would have been a boat anchor though.
