I know that wieght is an issue but I'm not concerned with that. But Is it possible to change the slider into a gullwing door? What hinges and other hardware would I need?

You need to lighten up the door as much as possible , first thing. The door should not have a glass in it. too much weight. Personally I am out of Cylinders to lift the doors but you need to ge a cylinder that has a lift capacity of at least 140 lbs break over per side or more to do the job.You will have to search the internet for the cylinders but they can be found. The old J&J cylinders (blue label) are not heavy enough to lift a steel door. This is very possible, you just have to find the lifting cylinders. I have some but I am keeping them for spares, but I can look tomorrow and get the brand name off them for you if you want. PM me if you want them

Cheers!

Ok thats a start. The door is solid, no windows. What kind of hinges would I use?

The J&J gull wings had a six inch sixteen guage piano hinge with 1/2 inch joints with an extra bend in it . I think it had about an 1 1/4 flanges on the hinge . PM me and I will Draw you a sketch. scan and send it to you e-mail

What kinda van are we talking about?? I used 3 inch house door hinges, with a little cutting a welding them, got them to fit decently on my Dodge slider door. Here are a couple pics of my setup.

The J&J hinges were Stainless steel and I would prefer using Stainless over regular steel hinges being the enemy of rust that I am. An please Do not take offense D-3, I just prefer SS

If it would be of any interest to you, the heavy-gauge stainless piano hinges I got for my fold-out bed top were from eBay, and the price was insanely good. Less than standard door hinges!

Clear skies!

Thanks for all the tips. I plan to do this to an 89 Chevy G20 shorty since I cant seem to find a gullwing. Hope to have it done by Keystone. Thanks for the photos D3, they will come in handy
