Well I went on a job interview the other day. A pool and spa company that my daughter's fiance' works for was looking for some people. He told me about it and they actually called me to come in for an interview. It was for a service manager handling their warranty department. Did I know anything about that type of work. Hmmm....I think so considering that is what I did at my last job for about 12 years. I had the plant manager, the general manager, the owner, the human resource manager and some other guy in on the interview with me. A little weird but ok. I then got a tour of the plant. Of course then the old we will be in touch. They did ask me how soon I could start and I said it was up to them. I did have a vacation planned for the week after the 4th but I could cancel it if I needed to start. It was not a problem. That would mean no Nats for us then. Well I am waiting to here. Of course they did not give any particulars such as pay or anything so that is another issue. Will keep watching and listening for the phone. Wish me luck. Of course the contractor friend I have also has two major projects he is starting on next month. One a remodel of a motel in Baltimore starting the week of the 6th. And the other a major construction addition to a nursing home here in town starting around the end of July. He wants me to work for him on them as well. Ahhhhhh.....leads everywhere but nothing happening. Patience.

I have work until the end of this week at my current job, then I'm laid off. We lost the school bus contract so there was no need for 3 mechanics. I went to school for diesel and graduated with honors. I had 3 years of automotive in high school as well as being around it since I was born. I have some experience mig welding steel. I'm looking for something idealy as a diesel tech, but anything that involves working with your hands and a lot of thinking would be great. Good luck to everyone!

Acreativename: Let me tell ya this. My cousin, also went to school for Diesel mechanics, past with good grades. He applied with the railroad. Union Pacific Railroad. he applied as a diesel mechanic and they took him on as a Diesel - Electric mechanic even though his electric skills were not that great. Those big ole locomotives have electric drive wheels powerd by electric motors, the power is supplied by diesel engins of course. Just being a good diesel mechanic got him into the door then they trained him to work with the automatic transfer switches, static transfer swithces, electric generators etc.. believe me he didnt even know one thing about locomotives when he got on, and he was right out of diesel mechanic school. Now he has been there for 2 years and is doing pretty damn good!

The downside is that you usually have to travel (at the companies expense), hotels are all paid for and you get a food allowance, that sort of deal.

Sometimes he is out on the tracks for a few days (3-5) days at a time, sometimes he is in his 'home shop' but traveling is a big part of it. He is single with no kids so it works well for him.

I believe there is a website for the company most likely something like www.up.com something like that. Actually YES I did just try that link and it will get you right to their website. They seem to have alot of job openings usually in track maintenance and diesel-electric mech.

Dont be misled if you dont know much or anything about electric motors and such... my cousin didnt either and he told them that up front and they still hired him.

Good luck.

Vince in So. Cal.

Acreativename: Ok. I just went and 'nosed around' on the UP site and the do have a diesel mechanic apprentiship program. they even have a couple of examples of test questions that you may be asked when you apply. It dont look bad. just go to their site and click on jobs at UP. they seem to have lots of good prospects for jobs there.

Good Luck.

Vince.

Well, we have joined the list of unemployed families here too now, as my wife got very pissed at her boss after a few weeks of telling the boss she could NOT work a close shift and then turn around and open the next day too ( she would get off work at like 1 AM and have to be back at 7 or 8 am) so she turned in two weeks notice thinking she could find a new job.... NOPE so now we have no income ( I have not worked in 12 years due to playing stay at home daddy) and no real job prospects either... THIS SUCKS! The cable/phone/internet will be the first thing to go, followed by the cell phones if we don't find SOME THING soon....
