Ok I like every body else have been glued to the TV for the last 5 days.Watching the tragic events unfold on the Gulf Coast.this email has got me thinking................

Just trying to relay info to yall up North. Go to www.jojamela.us , This is my friends' Mom and Dad's Site. ON it you will see the devastation on the marina where they lived. They are currently residing in BR along with the rest of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish. Baton Rouge has now become their home - There are no words to express how blessed we feel that we were not hit - unfortunately though BR has now become a place that we don't want to be - Thousands of poeple are now living here - gas is scarce - electricity is scarce - food is scarce- shelter is scarce. There is not even one hotel room or apartment left - we are overcrowded and understaffed. Our crime rate is expected to go up 4 points - we sit in traffic for hours at a time just to go down the street - chaos has started. I am asking all Northerners to please pray for us - pray for patience, pray for sound minds, pray for our life, as we knew it. I am counting on all of you!!!! Please tell everyone that we need help, people have lost everything - they have nowhere to go - they can't even cry with their families because they don't know where they are. I could go on and on about how some towns are being called dead zones b/c there is no way to communicate with them, that a hospital in NO is w/o electricity, w/o toilets, w/o air - there are over 500 patients there - try to imagine this - nowhere to go, trapped in a drowned town covered in sewage and gases, inside a hospital with no ventilation, no air, no feeling of hope- the only thing filling your stomach is the stagnant smell floating through the air. I hope this leaves you in awe - that is where we are at right now - in awe. I am sorry I have not been able to contact you all - cell phones are out and we just got our electicity back - others are not faring as well as I. Please now that I am safe and well, my only fear being what lies ahead in this crowded city.
Love Katie

I want to help.I have a couple of ideas. This disaster is bigger than the media can even comprahend. This is going to take the American people to stand together like we never have before
no Demacrats no republicans,no blacks no whites.Just people willing to help standing side by side helping there fellow man.
From donating to the red cross to volenteering time at a food shelter. Or in a parking lot collecting food and loading it into a box trailer.I dont mean just throwing money at this problem but like the people in texas are showing they are tasking care of the people that show up there and need help.
Vintage Chevy van Club had tree members that live in New orleans that made it though Ok. I got an email tonight from Katie from Baton Rouge and sha sounds scared.Baton Rouge is not a very big town to begin with.Towns used to panic when vanners just stopped buy for a freindly vist. I can just imagine having thousands of hungry sick people decend on your town what a tiz it can throw those people in.It is mind boggeling just thinking about the logistics of it
I was thinking we as vanner could pick a shelter lets say in Baton Rouge and show up with a convoy of vans full of stuff. What ever we can get out hands on or collect along the way.Pick a shelter and deliver the stuff, help pass it out if they need us to or drop it off and come back and get another load.Don't stop untill they ether tell us to quit or we can not help in any way.
some of us might only be able to make one run. Some might be able to make a couple. Some might not be able to afford the gas but might know some one that can collect stuff to be picked up. Some body can come and pick it up.
these people need every thing we take for ganted, easly stuff like baby wipes, diapers, stuff that there is plenty of around here but hard to come by for a while down there. After that they will need people to help rebuild down there.Even then they will need stuff from bodies to work. or supplies. There are thousands of little kids that will need school suplies.
The first convoy could a trip to see what we can do to help. What can we bring to them? Right now showing up at a shelter with bacic hygnes stuff like soap deoderanttooth brushed, cans of soup.Stuff that they can use and will not turn away.On the way back can we drop people that do not have rides off at there families.
This is a dynamic problen that is going to be changing from week to week. The Cream will rise to the top the good in people will come out like you have never seen before....................Wookee

Steve went to Lowe's yesterday to buy a new door for the garage and they are accepting donations for the Katrina devastation. He made a sizeable donation and then was told that Lowe's is matching 50 cents on every dollar collected for the victims. It would be very helpful to find businesses that are doing this in order to raise as much money as possible to help these poor people. Should we make another donation it will be one where our dollars go the furthest.

Buddy, is that our Katie in BR?
I've been sending lots of hugs and thoughts to her--and Kathy and Dennis too!

It is our Katie! I've got Mom on the phone right now and she sends her love to you Katie--if you need to get word out to her please e-mail me and I'll help you out. I don't know what else we can do for you, but just letting us all know what is going on helps those that are worried about people.

Our hearts are with you--lots of love!

I had herd today Baton Rouge had a population of 350,000 people.Compared to towns around here that is a pretty small town.
We are donating to Habitat for the Humanity.Alot of the houses that you see under water in new Orleans will need to be replaced.Along with the ones that were flattend along the coast.Fema helps but they really do not provide the suffecent funds to replace a destroyed house. There were allot of poor people in New Orleans that could not afford the proper insurance. All they had were there homes.

Another Idea would be a charity van show. The entry fee could be supplies/food.Along with collecting stuff fron the public.

Here is another email I have receved

Dear Friends,

I personally spoke with the Governor’s office in Louisiana today---they told me people are dying from lack of diabetic supplies---help me do what I need to do to help those in need----I ask you to send this to anyone you know---post it wherever you can. I was so emotional after that call. We are contacting all news media and Howard is behind the effort 1000%. It was said in the saddest day in our history by a man who wanted to overcome the impossible---I repeat it as a call to action so it becomes a call to help…….”Let’s Roll”

Pass this around. Post it. Print it.

With Love,

--Tom

I can put a face to the people in need on the gulf coast.A member over at the vcvc.org site lives in New Orleans his house was four blocks from were the leve broke. He lost his house his 65 Chevy van and a rust free 70 Nova and possibly both of his cats.He is living in Shevesport La with his aunt and 14 other family members. His nice is also staying there she has three children the youngest is three years old

Leadfoot and myself are putting together some sort of fund raiser to be held at Keystone Madness.

I was thinking about a Van Maintanance Raffel,a case of oil a couple of gallona of anti freeze.a nice wash bucket soap shammies Armor All a gift certificate form advanced Auto parts, and a gas card.
My family is donating a gift certificate for 150.00 from Wal Mart and a 50.00 gas card to be added the what every money we raise.
Leadfoot is donating close to the same amount from the profits from "Van In" magazine

We are open to any and all suggestions for this fund raiser.

I was also thinking about bartering for tickets.Items like baby diapers, personal hygene stuff, gift cards, canned foods,We will send this stuff to Gregg and his family around the 20th.any cash we raise we will buy gift cards from Wal Mart ,Sears or Target so there will be a paper trail that can be followed.
Gregg assured us that any thing sent to his family will be greatly appreciated. What ever they cannot use they will pass it on to needy people in that area.

If you are not going to Keystone maddness and want to donate some thing. My address is:
Joe Russin
110 Orsburn Dr.

Thanks in advance for any help........Wookee

We all do need to come together and help them down south. Saturday my 7 year old daughter spent most of her day selling lemonade and cookies. She made $175 and donated the whole thing to the red cross.

I see what is going on with the people in New Orleans and I can somewhat relate to them. Just not on the magnitude that they are going through. This is hell in its truest sense and these people need help. They are getting such an outpouring of support form the American people. Too bad our government can not be quite as forthcoming. They have pledged 52 billion thus far. Funny, we sent over 300 billion to tsunami aid. Not even our own country. Of course we get pledged help from other countries and they are told no thanks. America can take care of it own. You know, I am all for helping the other guy but when we need the help we should except the help and be grateful.
I do know what is is like to lose a home from flooding so I can relate. We did get help but it was not what it could have been from our government. And what help I did get I had to fight day and night for. The Red Cross is a wonderful organization and they need all the help they can get in this case. Even a dollar can help. We rec'd help from vanners in the form of some donations and from the 50/50 at Summerset last year. We also got help from our church and other local churches. It has been a year from hell and these people are only just beginning the journey. So if you can afford to help, by all means do. We are struggling big time still but I am helping with what we can. We have donated to the Red Cross. We have radio stations and other businesses that are taking donations to load a truck to send down. Donate a blanket. Shirt. Case of water. Case of soup. Case of baby formula. Diapers. Medicinal supplies. Whatever you can. It is needed and will be used. I will be at Keystone and will have a donation can out for anyone that is interested in contributing. I will give it to the Red Cross so they can use it to help these people. I will be on vendors row selling van toys, hot sauce and whatever. Stop on by.
Okay, I guess I am done. I just pray that everyone is able to get the aid they deserve down there. And the ones that did not make it are found, identified and given a decent burial and not just forgotten. Pray for all of them. They need it.

So any exta help will be greatly appreciated......
Americans helping fellow Americans.....

A Letter >From Jim Owens Regarding Caterpillar's Response To Hurricane Katrina

Caterpillar’s leadership group gathered last week for our annual Strategic Review Conference (SRC) excited about our new corporate strategy and updated Code of Conduct. Shortly after we started, news of the events taking place along the Gulf Coast of the United States began to emerge. Each day before beginning our business discussions, we talked about the tragic situation caused by Hurricane Katrina, reviewed reports on the whereabouts of members of the Caterpillar family, and brainstormed ways we could help. I’d like to share some of our discussions with you.

First to our people. I’m relieved to report all Cat employees and their families in the region have been accounted for, and no casualties have been reported. At the same time, it’s very likely many of our people in the area suffered losses physical, emotional, and otherwise. Likewise, our dealers most affected by Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana Machinery and Puckett Machinery, have reported no casualties. Some employees, however, have yet to be accounted for, and many have lost their homes.

Now to Caterpillar’s assistance with relief efforts. The scope and magnitude of this disaster is hard to comprehend, and while it’s still too early to know the exact needs of the region, it’s clear there will be enormous demands for help for the foreseeable future.

As expected, Team Caterpillar responded immediately. Across the enterprise efforts are well underway to mobilize product, personnel, and resources to help our dealers assist the governmental and non-governmental agencies who are responding to this disaster. Here are just a few examples of what’s taken place in the last few days:

At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Electric Power Division has arranged for 60 Cat power modules to be shipped from Brazil to the Gulf Coast region. Each module can power 200-300 typical homes.
Solar Turbines Division is mobilizing resources to support its oil and gas customers in the region to help restore production as quickly as possible.
The North American Commercial Division (NACD) is coordinating with business units to divert additional equipment to Louisiana and Mississippi to aid in recovery and cleanup efforts.
Much-needed work tools are being held for Puckett Machinery and Louisiana Machinery so that when the exact needs are known, product will be available.
The Wheel Loaders and Excavators Division (WLED) is donating two material handlers for use by municipalities in Louisiana and Mississippi. WLED is also working with Defense & Federal Products to donate a large material handler to the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers to help rebuild levees in New Orleans.
Due to the shortage of fuel, machines shipped to the region are being topped off with fuel at the plants so they can immediately be put into service.
Several Caterpillar employees have volunteered to use vacation time to travel to the region to help our dealers support their customers and the people of the Gulf Coast.
Caterpillar dealers from across the country and around the world have also offered to send personnel and provide other support to help in this effort.
In addition to this work, I know many of you have already made donations to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army relief efforts. The Caterpillar Foundation will match your contributions, providing much-needed funds for people in the Gulf Coast region.
On behalf of the entire leadership team, I thank Team Caterpillar for its generosity during this extraordinary time. Your compassion and willingness to help with this tragedy make us all proud to be part of this organization.

The out pouring of help to these people is outstanding.I really wish the media would concetrate on mre good deads that are being done instead of concentrating on the negtive stuff and all of the finger pointing...........Wookee

We have donated money and goods to the cause--
Steve's work matches contributions dollar for dollar and the business he chose matched 50 cents on the dollar--that made our money go further.

When I have been shopping at Wally World, I purchase a few needed items to add to the box at the door to help--toiletries, diapers and pet food are at the top my list now. (Clothing was an item, but they say they can't sort it and it sits in warehouses-unable to get to those that need it! If I had ability to take time off work...!) We can give a little each week and continue our efforts to help as much as we can.
My heart goes out to all the people of our beautiful Gulf Coast, but when I see the spirit of many of the residents from there--it gives me hope that the region will be strong again.

These people are now in for a longer haul. Now there is a big issue with Fema. Like they are a big help anyway. They give out the $2k debit cards, only in Texas, then they stop them. Now the people are to apply online or call the 800 number. These people do not have homes or banks anymore. How the heck are they supposed to get the money? Apply online? With what? Call the 800 #? Good luck there. If the people have a phone and can call, prepare for a good 3-6 hour wait at the least. I was on hold for close to 2 hours during Ivan so I can only imagine what it will be like for these people. There lives are never going to be the same. I can attest to that. Just not to the extreme that these people are going through. I can not even fathom there devistation.
All I can say is hats off to Wookee and everyone else for spearheading this fundraising campaign for these families. They need the help because it will be a long time coming from anywhere else. The Red Cross is doing what they can with limited resources. But the people are getting something from them. Albeit a drink and a sandwich. They are able to provide vouchers also for food, clothing and shelter. Unfortunately there is propbably not a whole lot in the line of shelter left in the area. So if you can help in anyway, please do it.

With Katrina my company has shipped over 100 loads of bottled water and other emergency supplies to the area. We have just been informed we should gear up for round 2 with Rita......which I am doing.............gladly. [Big Grin] And by the way, my thanks to the oHIo State Trooper who gave one of my trucks a ticket for 59 in a 55 Zone, and the Michigan State Trooper who gave another truck a ticket for 60 in a 55 Zone.. [Frown] It reminds my Drivers that even if they were involved in relief efforts over the past 20 days, have barely been able to see thier own families, they still should obey every chicken#%@*& law on the way, to the letter...... I haven't posted at all over the summer due to lack of internet connection, but now i'm back online and tryiung to catch up on everything here.

I am unfortunately not able to give cash now, but my girls did give their old bikes to the evacuees that are in Rhode Island from New Orleans. I'm glad we have somewhere local to help out. I believe we have over 200 people from there staying on our navy base. We will probably bring some other things to the kids over the next few weeks as we have moved into the house and have lots to get rid of.

a super big thank you for all those who were at the van in and contributed for the home depot gift certificates i received - ya know its kind of ironic - i know we have all heard about fema and redcross monies etc - as i was one of the earlier returnees- none of that assistance has been available here - not that i am looking for any handouts- if you stayed out in other areas they came to you - i was trying to do what i felt was right and get back and get my house in order - i even took some days off and went and helped at a local food distribution center- so a bunch of guys at a van web site and van in are there for us before the supposed organizations that are supposed to be in place - i have a lot of work still to do- try and get a sheetrock crew to hire now- i did not really want to do it myself but thats a possibility- i think i may have it covered though -while my profile says new orleans i actually live in kenner which is about 10 miles from downtown new orleans - the new orleans airport is in kenner- as i said below i did not get as bad damage as a lot of people east of here- but its still enough - so i lost a bunch of stuff - its just stuff- i have tried to get my wife to rid of things that never get used for years- well this was a heck of a way to do so! i hope no one else has to go thru this - i know i am more of a reader than a poster so you may not always see my name here- if i can offer a couple advices at this time- go thru all those things you havent used and either have a garage sale or donate them to goodwill etc- having to box the stuff i have that is savable and get it off to storage, while doing demo is a huge pia - second if you dont already have a digital camara, get one- make a file of all your possesions valuables etc - make some discs and keep 1 at home, at work - a few different places for that just in case time- i have said someday to many times in the past - someday i am going to do this or that etc - will now that has to change to today- it will not happen overnite but no more forever somedays - i have to sign off for now - so thanks again - oo3

Just an update to let people know that there donations were apreciated........Wookee

We need a direct person to person donation setup, I fear corruption is afoot with the organizations designed for aid. I've heard much of the clothing donations were rerouted into overseas sale, many don't know American's used clothing is big business.
I've gotten rid of a bunch of good clothes that could have benefitted someone in need over here, I can only hope it did, but now I wish I had someone directly to send stuff to. Being below poverty level, I can't do much, but I get my hands on stuff all the time that could help someone, can't afford to ship stuff, that's why I donate it.
I found from someone working for human resources here, there are many of the hurricane survivors who aren't willing to work, they just want a hand out, we had enough of those here before, now we're in deep.

I wish I could, but with the gas crunch and the food bank not getting much for hand outs, I'm over a barrel, don't look good for me. If everything is to go up as they say, I'm not sure how we are going to make it, I have cut back to not leaving the house and visiting family, saving fuel for necessary trips and it still zaps all of my money after paying my bills, leaving no extra for necessities. I just got paid the 3rd, I always depressed shortly after when I notice it almost gone.
I can't see how anyone who has lost can come back, the oil companies will help drive up the cost of goods and services, not to forget the shipping problems on the Miss.

Another chance to help out. Tuna - a member of our club here in RI - has a brother and family in Mississippi that lost a lot. Tuna took his camper down there a few weeks ago so they would have a place to stay.

Some local friends of his brother's are holding a benefit this Sunday, Oct 23, at:

Johnny Mac's Sports Bar, Pine and Dunham Sts. Attleboro, Mass., from 4-8 p.m. There will be live entertainment and raffles. Donations will be $10.00. Tickets will be available at the door.

I know many will be at Frostbite in NH for the weekend, but maybe you can stop by on your way home.

Vanners - doing for others because that is what we do!

we finally heard from our member ar V.C.V.C Gregg. His house was a couple of blocks from were the leve broke......
Hey guys,
First, let me thank everyone for the care package of clothes and the HD gift certificates. Also thanks to DW. Well, this has been one crappy 6 weeks. What Smiley said about my neighborhood is true. It cannot be described in words alone. Very much reminds me of Tombstone Arizona, like in the Old West movies, mud and dirt everywhere with not sounds and an occasional dust devil blowing down the street. My 1st day back was a total shock, there was not color to the area, just tan and a blue sky. All the trees are dead, as well as the grass and the shrubs. I have been back twice and am going back for the last time Saturday morning.
I had the van towed to my Mom's gutted out house in Slidell. I removed the complete interior and powerwashed the inside and underneath. When I opened the doghouse, it was solid, straight across with sticks, leaves, twigs, and pine needles. Pretty much starting over again. The Nova, I gave to a friend/drag racer. He is a body and paint guy too and said that he will name the car, "Katrina's Revenge". State Farm paid me off on them both at an appraised value. I bought a travel trailer in north Louisiana and brought it down here to live in until I can get settled with FEMA. Then I will need to find a town to live in. Slidell and Baton Rouge have almost doubled in size since the storm. Anyway, I am at the Slidell library and can stay on long, but just wanted to thank everyone and let you all know that I am alive and getting by. I will try to get back on in a few days, if possible. My cell number is 504-491-2373. Call after 9:00pm unless you have Cingular, then anytime. Later on guys, miss you all.

just another update......

Doing ok on clothes. Got another care package of clothes today from a VCVC member, thanks. What we need is for FEMA to okay permits to rebuild or repair. The only reconstruction goig on right now is where people are paying out of their own pockets. A few people have gotten their insurance monies, but they are also waiting on permits, which they are not issuing. It's a big mess. Glad to be back on the air with everyone. If anything good has come out of this, a lady at work found out that I had had 5 VW Bugs in the past and offered me her 1979 VW for free. She told me that it had gotten like a foot and a half of water in it and I figured that would not be a problem. I went to look at it Saturday and turns out it is a VW Beetle convertible in very good shape. It was her daily driver. So looks like I am back to a 3 car family again. Hope to go pick it up ths week. Anyway I have a lot of catch-up reading to do on the site. Oh yeah, bought some new tools at Home Depot with the gift cards you guys sent me. Thanks so much, all my tools got ruined in the salt water for 3 weeks
greg

Thanks to Ken and Debby for sendind Gregs family there extra clothing. The good harts of vanners never cease to amaze me........Wookee
