I talked to Chet yesterday and he said, "Just a lot of wind and rain" LOL. Now it may be my turn. Weather channel is saying a second landfall somewhere between New Orleans and South Wester Fla. I am in Mobile Ala. so that puts me dead center. I have always wanted to ride one out and I might just have my chance. People are filling up gas tanks, I'm filling up fridge with beer. They are saying possibly around Monday so still time to change direction. If it comes our way, I'll find where the weather channel reporter is and try to get some air time. Maybe get more beer? I have it here, plenty... Bad weather here too, but we ain't have hurricane around house.
My sister in law has been several hour without electricity because of August storms here in Finland. Not so funny with three small kids, I think. | | | Re: Vanner in paradise, Hurricane Katrina style #23721 August 26th 2005 11:21 pm | Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 1,675 Likes: 1 co-chairman, Southeast Van Council | co-chairman, Southeast Van Council Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 1,675 Likes: 1 | Good luck Gup. Glad it is available down here now. Interesting watching the weather channel as opposed to local news. Weather channel is getting serious about it where local news isn't getting too worried. Supposed to be a catagory 4 by landfall. Who to listen to. Anyway, thanks for the offer liljack. PM me you phone number. I may need it. See what they think. There is no real local news coverage. I'm about 5 miles from northern part of Mobile Bay. Up to 175mph winds at the eye of storm. Keep you posted when I get back. Hotel next to me lost theirs a couple times and ours is flickering in and out. Reports say we won't feel brunt of it for a couple more hours. It is 6:40 CST here. I understand the freight train reference now. I went outsie my room and I thought it was thunder I was hearing. It was the wind. Damn! We get some serious gusts but it will get worse. I guess I feel pretty good though since FEMA decided to stay at hotel across street. At least they are close by. I gonna hang online here until we lose power so I'll keep uou posted. For those not sure where I am, it's Mobile Ala. I usually keep it in frozen form in the bath tub, with adequate quantiies of canned barley sandwichs for sustenance............
The side advantage is when the power and water goes out you can flush your toilet with the water from the tub using a bucket. | | | Re: Vanner in paradise, Hurricane Katrina style #23733 August 29th 2005 8:28 pm | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 | That's balls, Gup. We still don't have power at hotel but I made it up to job site and power is on here. I just finished bringing all computer systems up for this store and figured I would give an update. I can only imagine what it looks like west of me. Heading up the highway to work and all I see are signs and trees all over the place. People lined up at gas stations waiting for pumps to come back to power so they can gas up. Luckily I filled mine up before. Police everywhere staking out stores so no looters get through. It's a pretty eerie feeling. I'm not sure if I will do this again. I might sound like a wuss but every once in a while I get a little emotional and just want to cry. It's just really hard to put into words. Its just amazing the devistation only 5 miles east and 20 miles south of my hotel. I just got lucky I guess. I just wanted to let all know I am ok, and I am praying for all those worse off. I'll check back later when I get back to hotel if we have power yet. I was living off of Oreos and Yuengling. Later, Gup | | | Re: Vanner in paradise, Hurricane Katrina style #23736 August 30th 2005 11:03 am | Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 1,675 Likes: 1 co-chairman, Southeast Van Council | co-chairman, Southeast Van Council Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 1,675 Likes: 1 | Gup, Good to hear you are safe... I remember seeing the Devistation that Florida went through after being hit by 'Andrew' (I think was the bad one). I can't even begin to think of how to recoup from something like that.

Give me their phone number if you have it and I will try to get through. I was able to get through to Baton Rough to my neice when her dad couldn't from Pa. Maybe the cell tower layout. That is if it IS a cell you are trying. If it is a land line than you might be just SOL. I am signing off now so my phone will be best way to contact me. My boss is trying to get me out of here today. I have a flight tomorrow but with the uncertainty of power around here, they are trying to get me home. That is still being reliant on the airport here in Mobile. It's a little regional airport. If not tonight then I will get back tomorrow. I had to keep my room for the duration while I am home or I will have no place to stay when I come back next week. All hotels booked in this area. This is the same crap I had to deal with when I started in Fla. this past Feb. Had to bounce around hotels for a couple months. Never closer than 50 miles from job site. Not letting that happen again. Glad to know you are well--I called to check on Katie and Kathy last night--no word from Kathy yet!
My heart breaks when I see the pictures on TV of the devastation and horror that people are facing--good spirits will help! Hang in there Spacemana and Maria, many people are fine and just can't get word out to loved ones!
On a whole other level--do you think any other country will send help like the tsunami or is that just way off the boards for anyone to think about because we are the world's savior and we dont' need any help from anyone! Whatcha think gang?! (NO, Doc, no offense--CAnada won't count on this one--you live too close!)

Seems like our circle never gets to close and with all the money we have tied up in Iraq (just a statement, not trying to start another War on Terror discussion), and the poor economy(it really isn't as good as the gov wants you to believe), how in the world are we going to help all of those people in LA, MS, AL and FL? WE've seen the kind of help that FEMA gave to Phil and his family--'nuf for now! He and lots of other Americans have this mindset that the US is better than the rest of the world and can survive without interaction with anyone else (ever seen those "get US out of the UN" bumper stickers?)
At this point I say we should take aid from wherever we can get it. Who cares where the aid comes from as long as it means those poor people in the South get help! | | | Re: Vanner in paradise, Hurricane Katrina style #23761 September 06th 2005 12:29 am | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 2 stranger | stranger Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 2 | The problem in taking help from some countries is in the political situation. We can't afford the help if it weakens our bargaining stance as with Cuba. I arranged 20 loads before I left and my staff continued to send more down while I was at Butler. The 40 % jump in fuel does not hurt us to much as I guess FEMA is flipping the bill. Which means American Income Taxes are funding the Fuel producers.....sorry guys...but I feel the water is to important down there to stop and park the trucks............... | | |
