Hello all! I figured I should start a new thread insead of tagging onto the previous owners threads. So, our newest addition to the fleet is this '77 Ford Econoline 250 known as "Death Row" on here. I'm mainly a VW guy. I'm also into Harley's and anything custom. My wife is into Jeeps and slowly getting into VW's. We both like older american stuff too. So a bit of everything! Right now though our current fleet consists of: 2003 VW Jetta, 1997 Ford E-150 work van (for sale, needs motor),1989 VW Cabriolet, 1987 Harley FXRS Lowrider, 1981 VW Rabbit Pickup, 1980 Jeep CJ7, 1977 Ford E-250 (Death Row), and my 1957 VW Beetle.

We decided to look for another van due to the motor problems with the '97 Ford. I always wanted to lower and hotrod style the '97. So when we saw the '77 we really were interested! We talked about some day getting a van like this, and i guess timing was about right. I used my '97 to haul parts and tow vehicles for myself and friends. But I've cleared out a bit of parts from selling at VW shows, and have really only used the '97 for towing and small parts hauling lately. So a '70's custom should work for that purpose and be really fun at the same time!
I try to do all my own work whether it be wrenching or bodywork. My shop is a 30'X40' that i can rebuild a motor or paint a car in... A-Z is the game. I can also powdercoat small items. I could post pics of some of my work later... but all this fun stuff is just a hobby. I work a regular job thru the day. Right now the main project is a frame up resto of the CJ7. There are a few other projects after that. But then a resto of Death Row will be in order. Plans are to maintain it right now and fix little things as time permits. My wife is going to work on the interior for now as I work on her Jeep. All I've done so far is replace the blown out mufflers with original style CherryBombs, installed massive airhorns, and fixed a couple little problems.

Hope to maybe join a club, and make a couple shows in the spring! Keep an eye out!

thanks everyone!
does anyone have any info or pictures of it as the original builder built it? any original interior pics? i wonder how it looked the first time it was built...? i know about the trailer and all... i see bolts up top where a wing might have been on there... i saw the pic of the wing on the matching trailer only. did the van ever have a wing for sure? i thought about adding one. seems like it had one anyway. what mods are looked down upon in this community? are wings good/bad?

I just asked because usually there's some sort of do and dont's about certain vehicles. In VW's you do not do what the Honda guys do! No graphics, large wings, huge wheels, lambo doors... all no-no's! european style is clean and simple. i think that's part of what i like about this van. the mods are done with very nice looks. you look at it like wow, a lot of work, but the design is better than factory. it's like a factory prototype or something... not way far fetched looking.

I still am not shure if the van you have is the one that was built down here in Md.
There has been quite a few changes done to the van since it left here in the late 80's
The original owner was a member of North Cheasapeake Bay Vans.
The original van had a matching wing,a double sun roof,a Van Trek grill,a double snorkle hood scoop,J+J flares, and Gull Wing,Gold centered wheels and gold anodized running boards.
The wings where corvette after market wings
The van had a burnt pine/ gray velvet interior.
The original owner did all of the interior work to the trailer himself out of a storage/rental unit.
Another club member did the van.The owner who never touched A saw much less a piece of wood.Spent the whole summer putting the interior of the trailer copying the stye of the wood work done in the van.
After the owner dropped out of vanning the van and trailer set at his dads place in a field for at least a year then it was sold and dissapeard from this area.
For some reason my scanner is not working right now.As soon as I get it up and running I will post some pictures of the van that was here in Md.
I was suprised to see the van/trailer again at the 33rd van "Nationals" in Pa......

Names have been left out to protect the innocent.....

It seems around here, vanners never say "Why'd you do that?", but are always interested in "How'd you do that?" or "What'd you do that with?" - the aftermarket has never been kind to customizing vans, but rather van customizing was born out of the creativity of the vanner!

Where in central PA are you from? I'm also a VW fan (vw pickup, vanagon, jettas, GTI, bugs have all been in my driveway at one time) and live in Dillsburg, PA. I'm new to the scene and got involved just last winter. You'll love it here. Shoot me a PM and we'll have to get together sometime if you are close. There's a few vanners in the central PA area. I was thinking about buying that Ford but have way to many projects already. I'd love to see it on person.

I normally would not post this picture because I had the exposer wrong

[Linked Image]

The back of this pictre had 1986 on it its over 20 years old.It was taken at an annual mall show that North Cheasapeake Bay Vans held IN the mall every year.

The first 4 picture where taken at Spring Thaw.Phil might be able to help me pin down the year of these. It was one of the last years at Shangrala Camp grounds. There had been heavy rains just before the event and the field they used to use for the show and shine had flooded and they used the 2 roads that went up to the pavillion instaed....

you can see the changes that have been made to this van.
"Utopia" style steel fender flares/running board have been added. The bumpers have been smoothed and "Tucked into the body and The grill has been changed to the 8 light set up.

All of the changes where very well done.Claude in NJ might have done them.Ken or Cris fron NJ might know a little more.
I don't think Claude messes with the puter

Claude did some sweet changes to the van when he owned it.
Done well enough that I was not really sure it was the same van....
Its neat how you can see the different styles of both owners.
We really hope to see this van back out and about again.....

i have no idea. maybe one of the PO's had it there...

and Joe, ya i remember you saying. just thought there might be more info from the community I could dig up. and i wasn't sure if Claude still had the trailer. might have to consider contacting him at some point. i feel wierd about splitting up cool custom history. even if it changes through the years, it's good to keep everything intact as best you can. the trip home went fine. i have it PA inspected and have fixed a few things already. actually drove it to NY yesterday and towed home a VW dirt track car for my friend! and i might have to steal your avitar...!
i like those older pics! that's awesome! thank you Wookee!

First off welcome aboard! I'm sure we will meet up next year at one of the runs.

I don't know all of the history of the van, but I do know some. Claude did not do any of the body modifications. He did repair a lot of it and had it painted at one time. He also did most of the interior that is in it now.

I fist saw the van when Marty and Joyce (Utopia builder) were living up here in Jersey. He may have done the ground effects, but I'm not sure. A guy on the forms here named Adrian owned the van at the time. It had the gull wing on the side and a clam shell door on the rear. Both were glass. The interior was leopard print with TV's everywhere. As I recall it had a bunch of stereo equip in it also. A short time later Claude bought the van from Adrian without all the TV's and stereo equip. Some time after that he bought the trailer. Claude revamped the trailer, built the interior in the van and redid a lot of the mechanical work on the van. A few years later he sold the van back to Adrian, but shortly after wards, Claude bought it back because Adrian needed to get rid of it. Then it went to C1run1 and the rest you know.

I want to turn my early 64 ford "no door"/no window into a giant skylight 24 window (one more window then the 23 window vw bus, I'll be king of the windows). Wana help Ken rofl

What if the windows are just painted on "fake" windows, kind of a mural, but no real window? haha

Hi Eric,

I'm Claud the previous owner of the 77 Ford Van. If you have any questions email me at XXXXXX. The pictures that "Wooky" sent you, are not that van you own.

not too worried about it all. wouldn't mind maybe having a chance at the matching trailer some day. otherwise, we're just enjoying the van and can't wait to restore/modify stuff. and hopefully take it to a few shows in the spring.

I was not really sure if that was the same van....

Just another twist in this vans life story.......

The one thing I DO know for sure the trailer Claude has is the one I built back in the 80's.......

well c1run1 stated Jay Hieser from maryland built the van orginally.

so who knows for sure. i know i did see the pic of this van with a matching trailer. so that's prolly your handywork wookee.

oh, i found a cool toy i forgot i bought earlier this year, out in my garage! one of those AVON Van's with the cologne inside. Still has the stickers on it, and in the box! what are they worth, if anything? i have quite a few of the VW Beetle ones of course.

well, had to put a new starter and while at it a new solenoid on this past weekend. not sure what happened. probably just had a low battery from playing the stereo a while with the engine off... i don't know...should have checked that better before i went to the trouble. but it cranks better and it will last.

we had the van up in your neck of the woods Nautic! ate at the Tokyo hibachi place there on the strip. good stuff. and Saki Bombs really do hit you on an empty stomach! (drive safe!)

he's not going to sell the trailer, he wants to fix it up(fiberglass and stuff was busted up on the way to the most recent virginia nats) he totally stripped out the interior when he got it and did the plywood and stereo. The side gullwing was steel and had a problem with the air shocks that supported it(door almost fell off on the way back from a truckin) I am in Claud's club, so i know some about it.

sorry guys! i haven't been on here much. the van is pretty much as it was. i have had no time to really put into it yet. just some new brakes and exhaust... and a few minor things. i got a new power sunroof cut out of a '94 Cadillac to replace the unknown make one that is leaking in it now. my wifes one car i built for her last year got hit fresh out of winter storage... so i had to put time into fixing that. and i have a motor swap and supercharger going into my one truck... and i have to build a CJ7 ground up and a Harley chopper before i can really sink my teeth into the van... ;(

i did put a sub woofer/stereo in for now and got the rear bed/bench working. added some air horns and that's about it. we have driven it to VA Beach once from central PA. and we've taken it to a few parties and get togethers at friends. it always gets compliments! i just hope to get time to work on it soon.

Man, I wanted that van a few years back when Adrian had it.Someday I hope to have the same style flares on my chop top as you have. If it were me I would do this van first & then the other stuff. being you are in PA are you going to the Nats,we won't be but it looks like you are a little closer. Good Luck with the van

but we might go to the Nats just to get some ideas.

It does have the J&J gull, but I'm pretty sure the rear is molded shut.

well everyone, my wife and i are thinking of selling the van...! i know, i know. it's a lot of fun cruisin' around in it. but it's still on the back burner of my list of vehicles to work on. and we really don't use it as much as we should. personally, i really appreciate what it is and what it took to build it. but i think the veteran van crowd here may have a member more worthy and suited to own it. i rather not put it for sale in some general paper or site. so i am mentioning it here and now. any interest please email or PM me for details. thanks.

thanks wookee.
got one private message on it. but ya, i would like to see one of the vanning.com members get her. the sooner it sells the better. because the longer i keep it, the more i'll change my mind! i have visions of how to restore it and make it better. but i'm too caught up in my other projects which are more my interest of specialty vehicles. (VW's, Harleys, and Jeeps).

Hi and welcome, I'm kinda new as well and also in PA from the Williamsport area about 1.5 hrs north of harrisburg straight up Route 15. If you have time you may want to consider checking out Keystone Madness in Pottsville PA Sept15-18th. Customizing and one of a kinds is the Key to Van customizing.
