You could try carriage bolts, then you wouldn't have large heads sticking up, just low rounded ones.

Hi Starlord, even with carriage bolts I'd still have to drill recesses in the plywood, (the plywood is going over the top of these... I'm going to reuse the original mounting screw holes rather than add even more.) and carriage bolts would be trickier to tighten or remove, since there's no head to grip.

I've got to get back outside; just reloaded my soda, and still more painting to do!
