O.K. Boy's & Girls here is the deal I bought a 1964 Ford Econoline Last week as a project van. I was talking with Erick the other day and to help him make 3 1/2 and 4 get off the ground I'm going to make it a custom VanIn Magazine van and place it up for sale on ebay. I will split the profit from the sale with Van In Magazine. here is a pick of the van as is. I was thinking of doing a verizon style paint job and doing the inside clean and simpel i bought a set of mint turbin wheels for it as well as a new set of low pro tires. any ideas will help. this is what it looks like now.. will keep you all posted..

Harold...or Weird...or whatever....

That's a very generous thing you are doing for the magazine and vanning in general! Although I won't be able to afford buying this, I will be watching with great interest how this project goes!

no rust one small dent in the front easy fix. and the guy i bought it from has a set of panel door's for the side.. the motor runs great and the trany shifts good..however we will go over every thing to make sure it will make a cross country run..

Sweet idea....what are you thinkin for a power train? Leave the 6 or swap in a V8 or dare we dream of a TRITON V10?!?!? My vote, as much fun as the V10 would be, would accually be to leave the 6 and add some beef to it (cam, intake, chrome, ect). Just my $0.02 worth. I do like the idea of the terbines and low profile tires.

i can't express the thanks for needed support
definately another random act of vanner kindness
... not sure a v-10 would fit
i wanted so bad to stuff a tundra V-8 in my chop but when i measured the width i found i'd have to turn the valve covers into seats! you'd have to widen the van
or step out spaces for the exaust and valve covers in the doors lol to stuff a 10 in an early

I dont know there was a guy back in the 70's that had a early econoline with a blown big block in his van. it had a super scoop in the top just back from the windshield and a plexeglass box that went around the blower. i went for a ride in it and i can still here the blower whine lol

Wow that is great news Harold. Now that is supporting your fellow vanner and his project that he has poured his heart andsoul into !
Wish you the best of luck with the project and as they are saying take a lot of pictures. The best one will be sent to you in your 2008 Vannin calendar, on the house.

WoW thanks Doug that is so cool I will hang it proudly in my office. I was thinking of doing a Rags to Riches story on it. all the guy's at the shop are hot to do it. my buddy John from the wood shop wants to do the inside he wants to make it look like a surf shop theam with lots of wood inlay like the old surf boards. i think with the grabber orange color that would look cool. and my friend from the stereo shop is going to place a Kenwood c.d. system in it.

First of all let me say this is a really cool thing you are doing here. Hats off to you Mr. Weird sir!

Are you going to give it the whle treatment with an interior and everything? (might fetch a higher price ;) )

Also a Vista Crusier roof on this would look pretty sweet....

*edit* Hmm i should have read the previous post. Orange would be cool on this.

Harold, you are a diamond among gems. This is a great thing you are planning.

A V-10? love the idea, but probably not for this particular project.

Ken if you are going to paint girls, on the side of a van or anywhere, first make sure they want to be painted, and second, use a non-toxic paint.

Orange with turbines? A great combination, just make sure it doesn't come out looking like the General Lee. LOL.

one of the thing's i want for this van is that it run's great and is safe for the new owner. and for that reason i'm thinking of going with the 64 van this onethe drive train is all new or rebuilt. all i need to do is the body and inside and it's ready to go.

the white van was a project van Pat the old owner did a lot of good work to it the body is very close to paint and it has all new tires and would be a easy finish job to do. I want for the new owner to come out and drive it home with a big smile all the way...

may i suggest ....no theme at all,
if it were theme specific ,someone who may not be a fan of the theme but is a fan of the van may move on in their searching
-if it was a desirable presentation with potential of "adding" their own touches i believe there would be more interest
..like a nice clean white paintjob or cost effective color
maybe with some flakes in the clear or something a little "extra"
but not so extreme someone seeing it just says
"wow out of my league or funding" and moves on
.. we want a "wow i want that!" kind of buyer
the magazine funding help here is awesome and much needed
but i don't want Harold to not recover what he will have into
trying to help

Hmmmm, how about a subtle white/off white two tone paint job with the Van In Magazine logo on the side? And shave the hinges and what not to give it a real smooth, clean look? Just my two cents.

I definitely agree with keep it simple look. White looks clean and goes with any color. No labels... Put that time or money into making other things better.

When are you hoping to have this van ready?

How about having the walls and floor covered on the inside? Would help to generate interest and it is a great feature if you ask me. When I bought the Red FLamingo the insulation was up and gray carpet was laid! A big head start on the interior for me!

Just a thought!

I like the idea of clean for this one as for the inside my buddy is working on the art work for it at this time. the body is in good condition so i hope to have the paint on it in the next week or so. I do have a bunch of white and some pearl from my other project van. I took the white one for a drive today it go's down the road good.

Yup, I think everyone agrees, keep it simple. White isn't too many peoples favorite color, but not too many people can say they hate it either, a little pearl would be nice. Red, blue etc are very specific to peoples taste. The rims on it look fine, are they in good shape?

Another benifit to this, whoever gets this van will have to become a vanner, if not where else will they find parts for a 64 Econoline. We've got all the contacts and parts vans. Ha Ha!

A deep Burgundy would look nice or Desert Turquoise green. That's a Mopar color, but very nice nonetheless.

If you want to sell a vehicle paint it red.
If you want to show off the body work, paint it black!
White hides alot. Looks great in the night under street lights.
Dark Green does not show the dirt as much as other colors.

What color are the seats? Interior? Pics?

Artwork? hmmmm... personal touch here that may not be everyone taste. Better to put in a 3pt seat belt?

White always can be a great base to start with, stands out in a crowd not to mention its allot cooler in the summer.

Seeing as how this van is getting built for resale keep it as simple/cost effective as you can........

This is one of the sweetest white Econos out there

White also makes a great "base" for mural work

I'm wondering if I should write a blog about my '71 Chevy van project? When I get around to start late summer in Aug/Sept, I'd be taking lots of pictures from beginning to finish. The project would take me maybe half a year to last. I've almost gotten all the parts I need.

I still have yet to find a nice set of wheels - preferlly 50" in rear and 60" front and vintage slotted mags. Gonna take me while to look for these mags around here.

Should it be good enough for Van-in project, hm?

thanks WooKee the chrome wheels on a white van wow that look's great. so here is the color combo ice white with blue pearl with blue old school VonDutch style pinstrip. and to finish the out side off blue ghost flames. it will have the turbin wheels with 185-60-15's on the front and 245-50-15's on the back. a set of High Jackers to give it a lil lift to the ass end. on the top will be a Super Scoop vent and a old school roof rack. just to finish it off.

picks to come were doing the blocking at this time. still looking for one more panel door for the side. it has the camper style in it now the kind that the glass open's so i'm going to use them in the back. have a set of chrome bumpers for it as well. also i just bought a original from the 70's Super Scoop. that was a score..

Good point Quiet1--the less alterations the better for bidding I think! Clean and friendly for the new owner to do as they may please.

It sounds really pretty WH!
I like chrome no matter what--just hate those painted bumpers!!!! Plus they don't hold up to the light posts in the parking lot at the grocery....hahahaha

it had a Rack and the vent hole in it. the price to repair the holes would be more then the price of the vent.

Yeah, the paint prices are up quite a bit. I just did a friend's car (Audi A4) for red pearl color recently - the can of paint at 1 pint is $60 CDN. That was enough for a hood and a fender! If do whole car - it'd be like about $300 something...whoa.

Bet my van - being a beast the size it is... I'm looking at a guess of $500 maybe! Oh well, painting by myself is cheaper at least.

I think it would be cool to start the bidding out at 1 bucks and give everyone here an opportunity to bid it up in minimal increments. That way we can all feel as though we had it for awhile? Of course the music will eventually stop... and a new van owner will be happy.

sounds the way to go to me.. as long as Harold sets a reserve to what he has into this so it is of no loss to all he has put into this
actually.. the reserve should be what he has into it, plus the listing fees IMO

Hey, talk about "old school"; today while I was outside acid etching the roof of my van, a B-17 bomber made two passes about a half hour apart right over my town! My dad worked on those and P-38's during WWII. 1st time I ever saw one fly! This fellow wasn't pussy footing either; he made some serious banks. I got a couple of crappy pictures of it... took too long to get down the ladder, remove my gloves and get the camera up to get really good shots of him. I suspect he was flying out of Willow Run airport up by Detroit; they have some really old flyable aircraft there, and the Confederate Air Force flies in there sometimes.

I've had a notion to work a B-17 in a mural on my hood... maybe that was the sign I was waiting for!

And no, I didn't have any beers. Bummer...

;0)

Old school all the way!

Clear skies!

I here you WooKee lol. Ram My Mom during WW2 was a pilot for the Army She flew B17 B24 and P51 Mustang as well as P38's She flew farry flight's from Burbank California to Hawaii. and later to Guam. after the war She was a test pilot out at Muroc field in Lancaster Ca. She was a good friend of Poncho Barns. her nick name was Shorty. She told me a story about the first time she met Howard Hughes She was trying to get a job flying for T.W.A. she flew a Douglas D.C.3 to Long Beach field as a test. after the landing she went in to the office and Mr. Hughes was in there he took a look at her and told her she had more Balls then most men. as she found out after the landing her plane was the first large plane to land there. all the men would not land at that field do to the fact the strip was about 800 feet shorter then all the others.. just a bit of history she never flew commerical. she was to short as they told her..I think it was a bunch of guy's that did not want to be showed up....

Yeah it definately is. All the bluse are hous of color with just more coats. The white is similar to what you described as you want to do. Maybe not exact, but similar.

the bummer about a Raffle is you have 100 people buy 10.00 each ticket's thats 1,000.00 to brake even on the build i would need to sell 600 tickets. it would be cool to get a lot of p.r. on the van bring it to next years nat's and call out the # that way. A real F-ing bitch thing today went to the shop to do some blocking on the van. opend the door and all my tools were gone. the real bitch was they took all my Dad's tool's about 80% of them were hand made by him and my Grand Dad. 1 English wheel circa 1918 a grip pinch from the early 20's a seamer and all his lead working tool's. no way to replace them. I did go down to the local tool store and cleand him out of body tool's..the show must go on...

They shouldn't be too hard to find at a swap meet...Around here the story goes that if it's ripped off during the week, it's at a swap meet or flea market on Sunday...Hope you find your stuff, then use the pinch tool on the scumbags!!!!

now thats messed up man
i would alert the local pawn shops
and attend the next local flea market
that kind of stuff is pretty identifyable when seen
chances are the person who took em isn't smart enough to use the tools them self and will attempt to sell em fast like a pawn shop or think they are
not worth anything much and toss them away to maybe be found by someone else still could turn up at a flea or he could be selling
the stuff there themselves
-
you've gone above and beyond with this gesture of support Harold
and we will find a way to show you the gratitude you very much deserve

and yeah what Nate asked... was this at in or on the property of the body shop? i agree you can not replace tools like that
i had a pretty vast collection of stuff passed to me from my grandfather.. military medals, hand made wood box's and ashtrays and things he made and collected in his 30 years in the navy
a handmade sewing box bigger than any tackle box you've seen made from grape crate wood... man that was antique roadshow stuff
20 years ago my girlfriend at the time was storing some of my stuff at her place..i was a week between apt's at the time and while i was away on a weekend roadtrip
a weekend before i was to move into a new place of my own
came back to her her place empty
groundkeeper had evicted her , (she was kinda wacky but thought my stuff was safe there).. but it wasn't,grounds guy had
taken what he wanted and tossed the rest in the dumpsters
and trash pickers took what they wanted all weekend
i knew he had my stuff because his old kitchen set was on his curb a week later a quick chat to his paperboy
i found the guys wife was bragging they got a nice table set from an apt someone moved out of and ...
and i also lost a nice maple dining room table and 4 captains chairs as part of my stuff... hmmmmmmmmmmm
the following halloween the nighborhood kids did a real number on his place... small consolation.... i still miss alot of the items i lost 20 years ago, so i feel your pain my friend
and hope you recover your missing stuff

just got back in from a trip to Bandon. my friend Tony from Bandon custom auto body gave me a call around 5:30 today He was asking me why i would sell all my old tools I told him I did not sell them that some one stole them from me. He told me to get over to his shop a.s.a.p. and hung up. so off i went got there and he had three cop cars there and a old uhall looking truck out front . i went inside and there were five cops my buddy and three guy's in hand cuffs one of them was a guy that worked next door to the shop. as it turns out the dumb ass was trying to sell all my stuff to Tony for get this $3,500.00 he told them he would buy it but he had to go to the bank for the cash and would be right back as soon as he drove off he gave me a call and then the cops. he told me he parked down the street and stayed there till the cops showd up. he told the cops that the tools were hot and the owner was on his way over. I got there around 6:30 and the cops had me I.D. my stuff. they got the guys for grand theft. the truck and tools are inside at his shop. I will go, over and pick them up in the a.m.. now heres the funny thing about the deal inside the truck was one of the guy's Snapon rollaway tool box and tools a Miller wire feed welder and a motor hoist. as the cop was placing one of the guys in the cop car he told the cop that he had his tools in the truck. the cop told him not any more and drove away..

Yes Keith it's all stock as for the drive train. I did the front end today. as of today I have $1,700.00 in it in parts and over 200 hrs. and about $2,000.00 of donated items for the van. Paint, Kenwood stereo System, wood for the inside, new seats, and a few other items..

Ok, my van's now full of parts and materials I've been gathering to start the project next month. I just got some nice metal sheet to use for surfaces on a table, an ash/cup tray and some areas. This sheet is the same used for poker game tables you see in casinos. Very nice feel! A friend sold me the remaining pieces - enough for my van.

yes John sorry so much going on. the paint order came in wow they sent me so much I think i can paint two van.s 2 gal's base primer 2 gals finish primer 2 gal's base coat white 2 gal's clear coat. and don't know why but 1 gal of fire red. and 10 oz's ice pearl. the body is close there was a lot of blocking to do as any early owner can tell you. I'm going up north next week with the van to have the inside sprayed with foam insulation. then off to paint. the last thing to do is the inside. however i do have all items for that project and my buddy is doing all the wood work. and his wife is doing all the fofo lol...

I would leave the spray foam insulation out.Just somthing to hold moisture against all ready aging metal.Use the second gallon of wihiote to sray the insides of the van to match the out side.

This Early got 2nd place at the van show at the "Nationals he did what I just said and detailded the van out nice.It really caught every bodys attention that looked at this van.

Californacation is another Early done this way......

I beleve strong that having GOOD paint like this on the inside of a van is better than installing any type if insulation on the walls that will trap mousture.
Even with a finished inerior having all the exposed interior metal painted to match the rest of the van gives the van a more "detailed" finished look.

I think they sold you enough paint to do a LWB 3rd gen......

I would be worried to put anything in an empty van without bolting it down... It will fly... and you will be ready for a ball park commercial where they plump when you cook'em...
It would be a shame with such straight body panels.

I ran a shop for 23 years and had TERRIBLE results with spray foam(which we didn't do or sell)...I had customers who had their bodies literally rust away from the floor from all the moisture. (I always pictured slamming on the brakes, and having the floor stop, but the body keep going!) Maybe Rhinolining would be a better option? We always siliconed the ribs to the roof and walls, to eliminate some creaks...The new bubble wrap insulation has served me well in recent years...glue it in with contact and you are done! I also glue it to the back of my wall panels for double duty, and a nice airgap in between.

I know we did a bunch of vans with the foam and never herd any thing about a moisture problem. I wander if that is a thing for back east or mid west. all the van's i did were in california. hell my van dark ages was all foam in the back. the guy that did the face rocks for Disneyland did the back of my van to look like a cave. the funny thing is you were bnot able to here my stereo from the out side with all the windows up or here any thing out side from the inside..

I lined my '79 Dodge with 1/4" tempered masonite, then bored big holes in the masonite and had it sprayed with expanding foam between the walls, ceiling, and even in the doors. This was done in Pennsylvania in about 1980, on a clean factory painted interior with no rust. It was sure nice and toasty in winter!

The bottom of the body panels and doors failed from the inside out, like On the Road mentioned, though as long as it was mostly garage kept, (nearly 17 years) there was no visible rust. Within about a year after I had to start keeping it outside in Michigan, it started with the rust. I think it was due to the temperature fluctuations causing moisture to condense out of the air like on a soda can, but with nowhere to go but down and into the foam...
and the foam had obligingly expanded and blocked any possible drains and ventilation paths!

There's a bit of a twist to my story... you ever heard of formaldehyde based foam? Yep, I got some of the last of that household type before it was pretty much banned. It's a very pretty white color, and when sprayed between panels it doesn't apply force against the panels as it cures like the yellow foam does.

I didn't realize exactly what formaldehyde was at the time I had it installed, and it took me some time to figure out what the peculiar bitey smell was; I thought it might have been the walls & ceiling deep pile carpet I installed, or the glue I used. It smelled pretty vicious in the van on summer days for quite a few years... perhaps that's why I'm so well preserved?

;0)

Really though, with no aircon the formaldehyde mostly blew out the roof vent. It's not detectable anymore, but I'm not using that van anymore now anyway.

If you can completely block airflow to the metal surface with the foam, I think you might be alright, but if I were doing it again, I think I'd apply some really thick sealer to the metal prior to the application so no moisture could ever reach through pores in the paint, and I'd allow for some ventilation along the base of the walls to keep any moisture from building up behind them.

Clear skies!

Ram4...you brought back memories of the summer I sold Motorhomes and camper trailers. The builders were using Luan paneling with Formaldehyde in the glue, in addition to spray foam insulation. Going int the locked up units was like peeling a bag of onions, then spraying pepper spray, the squeezing a lemon into each eye!

On the other hand, I, too am well preserved!!!!!!!

Then it's unanimous; we've discovered that vans with formaldehyde are the fountain of youth! -Sshhhh!!!

;0)

BTW, I agree with Snotty - I got a sample of that metallized poly insulation that lobucrod sells, and it's much better suited to automotive use than Reflectix. It's about 1/3 the thickness, and it's got much flatter surfaces, with no large "bubble wrap" type cell voids to rupture. It would be *far* easier to glue down without trapping air. I'd especially heartily endorse using it around the firewall and wheel wells where space is at a premium and it's apt to get bumped. Reflectix may be just fine for ceilings, but it wouldn't be good to bump into regularly, or point load heavily.

Clear skies!

So Harold, what do you do in your spare time? Do you even know what spare time is?

I guess with being retired all of your time is now spare time.

Harold we spoke about this and you have gone far above and beyond
in supporting this magazine project
this is a more than acceptable situation and wish everyone
effected by mother nature recently better days soon
also i can't thank everyone who has shown their personal support
in the magazine enough and hope my efforts in keeping it alive
and it's results show a fragment of my appreciation

thanks Erick the past few week's have ben a real bummer for me. the home i bought back in 1984 is no longer there i went there last week to check the place out and all that is there is a pile of ash and a hulk of what was a car. the guy i was leasing the place to did not pay the insurance on the place so all i have is a lot. the other thing is my 66 chevy van went through a year of body and paint work the last coat of clear went off and the paint job turnd into a big chunk of crap. it's now on my car tralier in the front yard and i need the room in the shop for it as well as the money to help me get back on my feet so I'm into any offer here or i will place it on ebay. ..

Got this email from Mike this morning. He has some great plans for it.

I just made a deal for a 1964 Econoline panel van for $1500.00. It is in Oregon and belongs to a long time vanner, weirdharold. He is a member of our clubs forums. He just painted the van white and is now doing the color sanding and then buffing. It has the stock inline six with three on the tree. My future plans for it are to paint it candy apple blackcherry with a small amount of silver flake and a metallic silver top. Possibly a rear spoiler, flared wheel wells with a ground effects kit that will have the zoomies coming out of it. Also lots of tru fire. Name will either be "Plum Loco" or "Burning Desire". Interior will be in a charcoal grey leather. The dash, doors etc. will be painted candy apple blackcherry. The instrument panel, glovebox lid, ash tray and dog house lid will be carbon fiber. The bottom of the dog house will be leather. There will be a console going from the dog house to the dash that will have a carbon fiber top and leather on the sides also an over head console with a dropdown 17" monitor and an in dash DVD player with monitor, All new gauges, glass, rubber etc. The back will feature a 32" screen facing out when the rear doors are open with four 12" subs under it and four 1000 watt amps. On the other side of the wall the 32" monitor is on will be two fiberglass towers with 12" subs and tweeters. The towers will either be carbon fiber or painted candy apple black cherry. There will be matching towers behind each front seat with the same amount of speakers and speakers will be in every door. May go with a gull wing door on the side and clamshell doors on the rear. Also two captains chairs in the back. Ample mood lighting will be added throughout. Mechanically I am thinking a Curry narrowed rearend with Micky Thompsons, C-6 tranny with a supercharged V-8. Also a drop down front axle with air ride suspension and disc brakes on the front and all new wiring.. Rims will either be Cragars or American Racing Torque Thrusters. Also no bumpers and the grill will be a custom carbon fiber one. I plan on this van topping everything I did on Vanishing Breed but it will probably take three or four years to finish unless of course I sell Vanishing Breed.
Now for my question, does anyone know of a good fiberglass fabricator in this area.

The good thing is that the van is going to somebody that will do it justice.

To tell you the truth, I had some difficulties with these threads....When the intent of the van's final destination changed, I had a hard time, as an admin, on where it should end up, that best reflects this site.

I decided for the moment to place it here...........although the current owner is not a member here.........

And NO, I really do not want a lot of discussion on the reasons I placed the post here..........

i don't see any difficulties
(aside from it being sold for less than the bodywork would have cost to do)
Harold even after the many times he has gone above and beyond to help a fellow vanner and this magazine
stepped forward with a very generous gesture to help
the lack of funding Van iN Magazine needs to achieve the expectations of a great publication that
everyone hopes to see for a long time to come.
(someone recently pointed out this magazine is about to pass the lifespan of many previous Van publications, without the support
that has been shown by those as dedicated as, and including
Harold, we never would have come close to even meeting it)
unfortunately his situation changed being effected by the recent wild fire and the loss of his house to it
i can not explain by gratitude for the things he
and others like him have done for this magazine
-we all were watching his efforts through this build and even with setbacks he still pushed forward with the same intentions
of finishing the van ........until the fires came about and no explanation is needed further IMO
and all i can really say about anything here is
THANK YOU

This is the perfect location for this thread. The van used to be Harold's so maybe he can keep us informed of it's progress (???) What say you Harold?
