hi, Ive got a lot of exterior lights on my van, and am considering the idea of adding a second alternator. I removed the A/C compressor years ago, leaving a flat surface thats looks perfect for modification for support of a second alternator. But before going that far, does anyone know of a bracket that i can swap with. This piece, where the A/C used to be, also provides the two tabs that the primary alternator connects to, so if there is a alternate piece, it would have to support the mounting of 2 alternators.

Ive got a 78 dodge van , with a 360.

Not sure if there is a specific bracket that would bolt right in. You may have to have a bracket made. I like the idea of two alternators. I guess you'll need voltage regulators as well.

I like your avatar. "Whatcha gonna do brother, when the 24" pythons and Hulkamania run wild on youuuuuuuu!"

why not just get a 200 amp alternator? It will run all your lights and then some.

Thanks nate, I recommend, if you have a source for MP3's downloading, to do a search for "Hulk hogan and the wrestling boot band" Nothing like cruising in the van with "i wanna be a hulkamaniac" blasting.

I may take Vanishing breeds suggestion on a higher rated alternator. Then all that would be needed is the regulator upgrade and an lower guage cable.

Is there any suggested place to pick up a 200 amp alternator? And whats the cons on the alternators with the built in regulator.

Thanks again!

My '94 uses a 120A Nippondenso alternator and it's a fully loaded conversion van. I'm pretty sure you can use your existing brackets to mount this alt., but you have to swap pulleys and make your own wiring harness.

Some in the Mopar muscle-car world have done this swap.

mine is a chrome 200 amp one wire by Tough Stuff. MSD has 160 amp one wire available thru Summit Racing. Powermaster also has the 140 amp one wire available thru Summit and Mr amp makes a 130 amp one wire available thru
performance Distributers

You might have good luck at the salvage yards looking for an older Dodge ambulance. The ones I wrenched on back in the day had Neville Bliss (sp) alternators that are huge. They all had 360's in them and I think they put out close to 300 amp. You could score the brackets and the wiring and any special belt setup. It is my understanding they are still used today in ambulances and fire trucks and easy to rebuild should the need arise.

I'd also recommend a higher output rather than a 2nd one. The drag on the engine would not help fuel mileage at all. They make alternators to power portable welding equipment, cheaper than the higher output ones you get at stereo shops. Power Line is one. Don't forget to get the voltage regulater for it. Had a 225 amp in my 85 Dodge. Some of the newer conversions are running 135 amp alternators, so that may even work.
