Wow, I found an original one of those in a friends house a few days ago before it was demolished. I also need a new charger and battery, looks fun though.

If they are 7.2 volt batterys, 5 rechargeable D cells hooked in series will work for a while

The battery-pack for the lunchbox is 7.2 Volt 6 cell (2x3).

You can find them on eBay or in the local hobby-shop, who carries Tamiya.

I found on ebay.com a seller, who sells 3 NiMh 7.2 V packs with 3.800 mA for 33 $ including freeshipping. That seems a good deal for me, I payed for 3 NiCad with lower capacity more than this in Euro:

3 pcs 7.2V 3800mAh Ni-Mh rechargeable battery pack RC Kyosho Tamiya

Since my post, that I ordered some parts, all arrived and during the past days I worked slowly on the Lunch Box.
I removed all the remaining components from the previous RC system including the mechanic-speed-controller and replaced the old Servo with a new one. This new one is complet metall, remembering that I broke the gear of the first servo during the first run of the Lunch Box in spring 1991.

I cleaned the model a little bit up, installed the electronic speed-controller, the 2.4 Ghz RC system and new aluminum body-mounts (from the UK), and now my Lunch Box is back on the road:

Originally I had planned to replace the worn out radiator-grill and front-bumper, but now I'm thinking about to build up a new body for the Lunch Box in a different color, together with chrome-wheels (from the Midnight Pumkin chrome edition), truck clearance-lights and horns from the Alascan Hauler, new chrome- and glas-parts and a lot of lighting systems. More a show model than a race-model laugh

I also plan to rebuild the front-axle with additional parts and replace the steering-rods withe the stronger version of the later kits. And with this, I will install the oil-shocks and aluminum-fasteners for the rear-axle. I also have on order an aluminum gear-cover (NOS part from the 90's) to pimp the Lunch Box a little bit more.
